Day 1 — Budapest → Balatonfüred: transfer and first kennismaking with the lake
🚆 The best low-cost way to start this route is to fly into Budapest and then head to Balatonfüred on the northern shore of Lake Balaton. By rail, the journey usually takes about 2–2.5 hours depending on the specific service and transfers, and bus options are also possible, but the train is usually more convenient in terms of price and comfort. If you arrive early, it makes sense not to linger in the capital and head straight for the lake: that way you’ll have time to check in, rest a little after the trip, and spend your first evening by the water.
🏕️ Balatonfüred is one of the most pleasant resort towns on Lake Balaton, with a rare balance between old spa-town elegance and a very down-to-earth, accessible style of отдых. It’s easy to stay here without a car, walk along the lake, swim, rent a bike, drop into small bakeries and wine spots, and in the evening simply sit on the promenade and watch the light on the water turn golden. For a budget trip, this is an especially good base: beaches, the port, bus stops, cycling infrastructure, and short outings to Tihany are all nearby.
🚶 After checking in, devote the rest of the day to a calm walk along the famous Tagore Promenade. This is one of Balatonfüred’s calling cards: a wide promenade lined with trees, benches, boats by the water, and the gentle atmosphere of an old European resort. There’s no need to rush here — the route itself is already part of the отдых. On the way, it’s nice to pause for ice cream or coffee, and then continue to the port, where the sunset and the white sails on the smooth surface of Balaton are especially beautiful.
💡 It’s best to keep the evening light: an early dinner, buy water and food for breakfast, take a short walk through the center, and go to bed early. The route is designed as an affordable, non-exhausting holiday, so the first day is not overloaded with sights. Overall, the country is safe; standard caution is needed in tourist areas of Budapest and on public transport.
