Day 1 — Sofia → Velingrad: an easy arrival and evening by the mineral water
🚆 Transfer: Sofia → Velingrad. The most convenient realistic option for a short itinerary is a transfer or car: the journey takes about 2 hr 30 min–3 hr 10 min depending on traffic and your departure point. An alternative for those who enjoy slow rail travel: take the main line to Septemvri, then change to the famous narrow-gauge Septemvri–Dobrinishte railway that runs through the Rhodopes to Velingrad. This option is atmospheric, but noticeably longer and less suitable for a short 4-day trip if you want to save your energy for SPA time and walks.
💤 After check-in, do not overload the first day with sightseeing: Velingrad is valued not for a “mad dash between spots,” but for its rare combination of mountain air, pine forests, and mineral water. The town has long been known as the SPA capital of Bulgaria and is especially good in the format of slow отдых. It is better to devote the day to easing into the rhythm of the resort: a late lunch, a short nap or at least an hour of quiet in your room, then a few hours in the pools and thermal area. In the evening, go for a calm walk around the Ladzhene or Chepino district: there is no capital-city rush here, and the whole atmosphere is built around the feeling of a spacious, green, relaxed resort where people come not to hurry, but to recover.
🚶 If you still have some energy, end the day at Kleptuza Park — the symbol of Velingrad. Here the air becomes especially cool and humid, the spring water amazes with its clarity, and among the pines and the smooth surfaces of the lakes, the town seems to dissolve into the landscape. This is an ideal first meeting with the region: no long walks, but a very precise sense of the place. This is exactly how Velingrad reveals itself best — first through the body, then through the eyes, and only after that through museums, routes, and nature outings.
