🧭 DAY-BY-DAY ITINERARY

Day 1 — Varna: historic center, cathedral, Archaeological Museum, and Sea Garden

  • 🚶 It is best to devote the first day to a gentle introduction to Varna — a city where the Black Sea resort rhythm unexpectedly blends with a very deep historical layer. Start in the center by the Cathedral of the Assumption and Maria Luiza Boulevard, then continue to the Archaeological Museum: it is one of the city’s strongest sites, especially impressive for its sense of antiquity and the scale of the region. After the museum, do not rush — give yourself a pause for coffee and a slow walk toward the pedestrian streets in the center. In the second half of the day, head into the Sea Garden: here Varna becomes completely different — green, salty, southern, with long alleys, light over the sea, and a lazy feeling of vacation. The best end to the day is a walk to the waterfront and beach strip without a strict plan: the first day should not tire you out, but rather “tune your eye” to the city.

Day 2 — Varna: Roman Baths, port line, and relaxing by the sea

  • 🚶 On the second day, combine Varna’s ancient and maritime character. In the morning, head to the Roman Baths — this is not a small “museum object,” but very expressive ruins that are easy to appreciate even without special preparation: massive walls, the empty spaces of ancient rooms, and the southern light create an almost Mediterranean atmosphere. It is worth allowing time not only for the site itself, but also for a short rest afterward: the area invites a slow pace. Then move toward the seaside part of the city and take a long walk along the sea, stopping from time to time at viewpoints, terraces, or cafés. If the weather is warm, this day works perfectly in the format of “antiquity + sea + a beach break”: Varna is at its best precisely when the route alternates cultural density and air.

Day 3 — Varna and surroundings: Aladzha Monastery and the northern coast

  • 🚗 The third day is best made into an outing, but without heavy logistics. Head to Aladzha Monastery — a medieval rock monastery in a forested area north of Varna. It is a very atmospheric place: the road gradually leads you out of the seaside city into a quieter, shadier, and almost hermit-like landscape, while the monument itself seems to grow out of the limestone wall. Here the contrast between the noisy resort strip and the inward-looking, contemplative Bulgaria is felt especially strongly. After your visit, do not try to squeeze in too many points: it is better to leave time for rest, lunch, and a short stop on the coast near Golden Sands or on the way back. A day like this is important for the route so that the trip does not boil down only to central Varna, but shows the region more broadly — with nature, history, and a change of pace.

Day 4 — Balchik: sea, botanical garden, and palace

  • 🚶 Dedicate the final day to Balchik — one of the most beautiful and photogenic places on the northern Bulgarian coast. It is convenient to go there from Varna in the morning so you can spend almost the whole day around the palace and park complex. Balchik feels different from Varna: less urban noise, more white stone, terraces, descents to the sea, and quiet resort elegance. The main pairing of the day is the Botanical Garden and the palace: here the route develops not by the principle of “checking the box,” but as a walk of observation. Terraces, stairways, arches, cypresses, collections of rare plants, water panoramas, and the architecture of the summer residence create an almost cinematic impression. Allow enough time for climbs, descents, photo stops, and rest in the shade — the place is beautiful, but requires an unhurried pace. If you still have energy, add a short walk along the Balchik waterfront and finish the trip with dinner by the sea before returning to Varna.
