USTYURT • PLATEAU AND CANYONS

USTYURT • PLATEAU AND CANYONS

From the breezy Caspian shores of Aktau, venture through Shetpe’s rock valleys to the Ustyurt Plateau, where Bozzhyra’s soaring cliffs, Tuzbair’s gleaming salt flats, and Karynzharyk’s mirrored basins feel otherworldly. Pause at the reserve museum in Zhanaozen, then loop back to the sea with desert horizons still in your eyes.

🧭 ITINERARY BY DAY

Day 1 — Aktau: tune in to Mangystau + local history museum

  • ✈️ Arrival in Aktau (SCO), check-in and rest. By evening — a walk along the Caspian waterfront: a flat horizon line, low sun and limestone cliffs create an “introduction” to the geology of the Ustyurt Plateau.

  • 🏛️ Visit to the Regional Museum of History and Local Lore named after Abish Kekilbayuly: the “Tethys — the ancient sea” halls, archaeology and ethnography tune your eye to the shape of stone, traces of ancient settlements, types of gravestones (koitas/saganak) — everything you will later “read” in the landscape.

Day 2 — Karagiye and Kapamsai: the “architecture” of depressions and canyons

  • 🚙 Out-and-back trip from Aktau: viewpoints over the Karagiye Depression (one of the deepest in Eurasia) — a giant amphitheater with step-like “tiers.” Light and shadow along the edges of the ledges help you understand how scree and karst “write facades” in the desert relief.

  • 🟦 Kapamsai: a chalk canyon on the Tupkaragan Peninsula (≈130 km from Aktau, part of the way is a graded dirt road). Walls of white limestone with cornices and wind-erosion “coffers”; below — oasis pools after rains. Nearby — Shakpak-Ata (underground mosque, 9th–13th c.).

Day 3 — Torysh (Valley of Balls) → Sherkala → Ayrakty: “sculptures of the wind”

  • 🚙 Transfer via Shetpe. Torysh — fields of sphero-concretions amid semi-desert: geological “balls” lie like archaeological artifacts. Next — Sherkala (a lone “table-fortress”): at its foot you can read remnants of ancient trails. Finale — the Ayrakty Valley (Shomanay), nicknamed the “Valley of Castles”: rows of towers and buttresses of tuff and chalk, perfect for sunset.

Day 4 — Kyzylkup/“Tiramisu” rocks → reaching Bozzhyra

  • 🟫 In the morning — the “warm” deposits of Kyzylkup (banded loams, nicknamed “Tiramisu”). By day — transfer to the Bozzhyra tract (edge of Ustyurt). Set up camp/eco stop, sunset at the panorama of the “fangs” — white chalk bastions rising above the ancient floor of the Tethys Sea.

Day 5 — Bozzhyra: white “castles” and the Western Chink escarpment

  • 🚶 Early start: trails along the chink rim, views of the “fang” spires and the Bozzhyra amphitheater. The day — unhurried reading of stratigraphy: layered packages of chalk, marl and siliceous interbeds; cornice-like overhangs, karst windows. In the evening — astronomical observations: the absolutely dark sky of the Ustyurt Desert.

Day 6 — Tuzbair: mirror salt flat and chalk cornices

  • 🚙 Transfer to the Tuzbair salt pan (≈3–4 hours from Bozzhyra). A white mirror-like plateau and sheer chalk cliffs with weathering “folds”: with high humidity, the salt pan reflects the rocks like a huge panorama mirror. Best shots — at sunrise/sunset. Night — camp on the dry edge of the salt pan.

Day 7 — Shopan-Ata: necropolis and underground mosque (10th–13th c.)

  • 🕍 Transfer to the Shopan-Ata necropolis: one of the largest funerary-and-cult complexes in Mangystau (thousands of above-ground grave structures). The underground mosque is carved into the rock: a chamber system with niches and partitions; on the surface — koitases and saganaks, through which you can “read” the plasticity of steppe memorial architecture.

Day 8 — Beket-Ata (Oglandy): sacred architecture of the Ustyurt escarpment

  • 🕍 Road east across the plateau (≈5 hours including dirt roads): the main Beket-Ata underground mosque with a necropolis on the rim. Descent by serpentine to the grotto-cave (an active place of worship). Inside — carved column-pylons, micro-spaces for private prayer. Modest clothing is important; photography inside is often restricted.

Day 9 — Zhanaozen: Ustyurt Reserve museum + permit preparation

  • 🏛️ A short drive to Zhanaozen: visit to the Ustyurt Nature Reserve museum (reserve) at the directorate — a compact exhibition about the fauna/flora of the Ustyurt Desert, models, fossils. It’s also convenient here to уточнить regimes/approvals for trips to protected areas.

Day 10 — Karynzharyk: the “three batyrs” and horizontal worlds

  • 🗺️ A long day trip (early departure, 4×4, weather-dependent and subject to the reserve’s regulations): viewpoints over the Karynzharyk Depression — the “three batyrs” (solitary buttes on the floor of a black-salt bowl), gigantic flat vistas where the geometry of horizons works like minimalist “architecture of emptiness.”

Day 11 — Canyon chains and Ustyurt “kiliki”: landscape “details”

  • 🚶 An unhurried day tailored to the group’s specific interests: side gullies, dry channels, scree “tongues,” gully outlets to the chink rim. Optionally — return to a favorite place (Bozzhyra/Tuzbair) for “golden hour” and the final shoot.

Day 12 — Return to Aktau: gathering impressions and the sea

  • 🚙 Transfer to Aktau. Free time: Caspian beaches, fish/teahouses. Compare “before/after”: museum — necropolises — underground mosques — chinks and sors — you’ll take away a complete picture of Ustyurt as a cultural-natural landscape.
