🧭 DAY-BY-DAY ITINERARY

Day 1 — Istanbul: Sultanahmet and first impressions

  • 🚶 Istanbul’s historic heart greets you at once with a whole panorama of empires: from the Hippodrome Square with the Egyptian Obelisk to the shining domes of Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque. Walking between them is like flipping through an open-air architecture textbook: Byzantine arches, Ottoman tiles, palace fountains. Step into the underground world of the Basilica Cistern — a forest of columns in soft light, silence, and mirrorlike water. For a break — baklava and strong Turkish tea in a street teahouse overlooking Gülhane Park. In the evening — a gentle sunset over the Sea of Marmara and minarets sketching the pink sky.

Day 2 — Istanbul: Topkapi Palace, Archaeological Museums, and Gülhane

  • 🚶 Topkapi Palace is the sultans’ residence and an entire city within walls: four courtyards, pavilions with views of the Bosphorus, the treasury, and the famous Harem. Then — down an Ottoman lane to the Istanbul Archaeological Museums: marble sarcophagi, Assyrian bas-reliefs, and ancient inscriptions create a rare concentration of world history across a few floors. The finale — a stroll through Gülhane Park along plane trees: songbirds, the scent of lilac in spring, and boundless foliage on a summer noon.

Day 3 — Istanbul: Galata, Karaköy, and contemporary art

  • 🚶 From the European façades of Pera–Beyoğlu, descend to Karaköy’s waterfront: cafés, bakeries with simit, graffiti, and the Tophane shipyard. Here is the new home of Istanbul Modern on the waterfront: glass, light, galleries of Turkish and global contemporary art, film programs, and views of the strait. Next — Galata Tower, narrow streets with antique shops, and Istiklal Avenue in the evening with its vintage tram — music, shop windows, galleries.

Day 4 — Istanbul: the Bosphorus, Dolmabahçe, and Ortaköy

  • 🚶 Dolmabahçe Palace on the Bosphorus shore is late Ottoman European-style luxury: crystal staircases, a park with palms, and views of the strait. Walk along the waterfront to Ortaköy — a mosque by the water, steamboats, and baked potatoes “kumpir” from street kiosks. The perfect end to the day is a one-hour Bosphorus cruise: palaces, the Rumeli and Anadolu Hisarı fortresses, waterfront villas (yalı), seagulls swooping by, and the lights of two continents.

Day 5 — Flight to Aegean Turkey: Istanbul → İzmir → Selçuk (Ephesus)

  • ✈️ Day logistics: flight Istanbul (IST/SAW) → İzmir (ADB) ~1h10m; from the airport — by Havaş bus/İZBAN+train or transfer to Selçuk ~1–1.5h. Plan ~3–3.5 hours total door-to-door, including baggage claim.

  • 🚶 Selçuk is a quiet town by Ayasuluk Hill, a convenient base for Ephesus. After check-in — vineyard slopes and the village of Şirince: white houses, pomegranate juice, shops with honey and olive oil. In the evening — dinner overlooking the valley and an early night before “big” Ephesus.

Day 6 — Ephesus: an ancient metropolis and a museum

  • 🚶 In the morning — Ephesus: Marble Street, the theater on Mount Pion’s slope, the frescoes of the Terrace Houses, and the apotheosis — the Library of Celsus with its sunlit façade. After the ancient city — the Ephesus Archaeological Museum in Selçuk: both statues of Artemis, the Imperial Cult hall, coins, and marble portraits — the perfect “afterword” to the ruins. Timing for the whole day: 3–4 hours for Ephesus + 1–1.5 hours for the museum, plus travel and lunch.

Day 7 — Selçuk → Pamukkale (Denizli): travertines and Hierapolis

  • 🚆 Transfer: TCDD train Selçuk → Denizli ~3–3.5h (runs every few hours) or bus ~3–3.5h. From Denizli otogar — dolmuş to Pamukkale ~20–25 minutes.

  • 🚶 Pamukkale is the “cotton castle”: white travertine cascades, warm thermal pools, and a view over the valley. Above the terraces — ancient Hierapolis: a theater with carved scaenae, a necropolis, and the Antique Pool with columns in emerald water. Best time is early morning or sunset to avoid crowds and harsh sun.

Day 8 — Pamukkale → Antalya: Kaleiçi old town

  • 🚌 Transfer: Pamukkale/Denizli → Antalya by intercity bus ~3–4h, frequent departures throughout the day.

  • 🚶 Kaleiçi is a tangled labyrinth of Ottoman mansions with carved bay windows, cobbled lanes down to the harbor, orange trees in courtyards, the ruins of the Roman Hadrian’s Gate, and minarets like stone arrows. In the evening — sunset over Konyaaltı and dinner in the inner courtyard of an old han.

Day 9 — Antalya: Perge and Aspendos

  • 🚶 A day of ancient Pamphylia: morning in Perge — the stadium, colonnaded streets, nymphaeum, and huge marble statues (many you’ll later see in the Antalya Museum). Then — Aspendos with one of the best-preserved Roman theaters: perfect acoustics, a powerful stage building, and views over the plain. Plan 5–7 hours including travel and lunch; easiest by rental car/taxi or an organized tour.

Day 10 — Antalya: hike to Termessos + beaches

  • 🚶 Termessos is the “city in the clouds” in Güllük National Park: a climb up the winding road, then a 30–45 minute trail to the agora, the cliff-edge theater, and stone streets among pines. This is more hiking than a “museum walk”: sneakers, water, hat. After descending — a swim at Konyaaltı or a walk through Karaalioğlu Park overlooking the bay.

Day 11 — Antalya → Cappadocia (Göreme/Uçhisar): arrival and sunset

  • ✈️ Transfer: direct flights Antalya (AYT) → Kayseri (ASR) or Nevşehir (NAV) happen seasonally; on other dates it’s more often 1 connection via Istanbul. Air time on a direct flight ~1h10–1h20; transfer from ASR to Göreme ~1h, from NAV ~40–50 minutes. Alternative — night bus ~8–9h.

  • 🚶 On arrival — check into a cave hotel and take an easy walk to viewpoints: Red/Rose Valleys blaze at sunset; below are vineyards and “fairy chimneys.” Dinner — testi kebab, a fragrant clay pot cracked open before serving.

Day 12 — Cappadocia: Göreme Open-Air Museum and valleys

  • 🚶 Göreme Açık Hava Müzesi is a monastic complex with churches from the 9th–12th centuries: the bluish vault of Tokalı, the ochre apostles of Elmalı, snakes and saints in Yılanlı. Be sure to enter the “Dark Church” (separate ticket) — the best-preserved frescoes thanks to minimal light. Afterward — walk through Love Valley and climb to Uçhisar Castle for a 360° panorama of Cappadocia.

Day 13 — Cappadocia: underground cities and Ihlara

  • 🚶 In the morning — the underground world of Kaymaklı or Derinkuyu: narrow tunnels, ventilation shafts, wine presses, and round “millstone” doors for blocking passages. Then — Ihlara Canyon: a trail along the Melendiz River, cave chapels, and a picnic under plane trees. In the evening — pottery and wineries in Avanos or dinner on a terrace in Ürgüp.

Day 14 — Return: Cappadocia → Istanbul and a farewell Asian shore

  • ✈️ Flight from NAV/ASR to IST/SAW ~1h20m + transfer. If time allows — a final walk around Kadıköy–Moda: a market of spices and cheeses, third-wave coffee shops, a waterfront with cats and seagulls. In the evening — a ferry across the Bosphorus and the lights of two continents.
