Day 1 — Burgas → Sozopol: old town and seaside promenade
🚆 / 🚖 Arrival via Burgas Airport and transfer to Sozopol — the most logical start for a short three-day route along Bulgaria’s southern coast. The journey from Burgas Airport to Sozopol usually takes about 45–60 minutes by taxi or private transfer, depending on traffic and your exact accommodation point. If traveling by public transport via Burgas bus station, allow extra time for connections and waiting. It’s a compact transfer without the exhaustion of a long journey, so even on the day of arrival you can calmly check in, have lunch, and head out for your first walk by the sea.
🚶 Old Sozopol is one of those places where the sea and history quite literally merge into a single landscape. This ancient town, which grew on the site of ancient Apollonia Pontica, feels not like an open-air museum but like a living, breathing seaside labyrinth: narrow cobbled streets, wooden houses with dark facades in the characteristic Black Sea style, stone foundations, carved bay windows, laundry on balconies, small courtyards with grapevines, and salt in the air. It is especially pleasant to walk here without rushing — from the Archaeological Museum through the southern lanes, then toward the seafront and old churches. The light in Sozopol changes beautifully: by day the town is white and golden, and by evening the walls and wood turn honey-colored, making the old houses look almost theatrical.
🏛️ If after the road you want not just a walk but a quick immersion into the context, start with the Archaeological Museum of Sozopol. It is small in size but very important in content: ancient pottery, amphorae, coins, cult objects, and finds from Greek, Thracian, and Roman times build a rich story of the city, which was not a resort but a significant trading and maritime center. After the museum, the Old Town is perceived differently: every street and every fragment of wall gains depth, and a simple walk turns into a journey through the centuries.
🌊 It’s best to devote the evening to the sea and unhurried relaxation. Walk to the promenade and the viewpoints at the edge of the peninsula, watch the waves crash against the rocks and the boats return to the bay. Then you can head to Sozopol Central Beach or simply settle into a café overlooking the bay. This first day should not be overloaded: the idea of the route is to ease gently into the rhythm of the coast, feel the blend of antiquity and resort-style relaxation, and go to bed already feeling that the vacation has truly begun.
