🧭 DAY-BY-DAY ITINERARY

Day 1 — Sofia: Serdika, the Largo, and Vitosha Boulevard

  • 🚶 Start in the heart of ancient Serdika: the Largo district with its open-air archaeological level, the 4th-century Rotunda of St. George in an inner courtyard between modern buildings, and Independence Square. From here, head down to the Banya Bashi Mosque and the former Mineral Baths (today the Regional History Museum) to feel the city's layered history. End the day with a walk along the pedestrian Vitosha Boulevard: views of Mount Vitosha, street musicians, shop windows, and great terraces for an evening dinner.

Day 2 — Sofia: Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the "Palace", and Kvadrat 500

  • 🚶 Morning at St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral — the golden domes look especially good in slanting light. Nearby are two key National Gallery buildings: the "Palace" with temporary exhibitions in the former royal palace, and Kvadrat 500 — Bulgaria's largest museum building, with art from the Renaissance to contemporary. In between, enjoy the quiet Shishman and Oborishte streets with cafes and bookstores. In the evening — the National Assembly Square and panoramas of the church and the university.

Day 3 — Sofia: the Central Baths and the city's history

  • 🚶 Visit the Sofia Regional History Museum in the building of the former Central Mineral Baths — inside is a neat exhibition from antiquity to the 20th century and the spirit of old Sofia. Nearby are the Women's Market and the synagogue; then stop by the National Archaeological Museum (housed in the oldest Ottoman mosque, Buyuk), with Thracian treasures and artifacts from across the country. The day is about the city's "roots", balancing architecture and archaeology.

Day 4 — Sofia: Borisova Gradina and the university quarter

  • 🚶 The city's green axis is Borisova Gradina Park, with a water-lily lake, alleys, and sports grounds. Walk from Eagle Bridge to the "Vasil Levski" stadium, turn toward Sofia University and Sts. Cyril and Methodius Square. It's an "academic" day: book stalls, cozy cafes, and the feeling of a great European capital that, by the water and among the trees, remains intimate.

Day 5 — Sofia: the NDK and the South Park

  • 🚶 The National Palace of Culture (NDK) and the squares around it are a good starting point for "modern Sofia": the geometry of Bulgaria Boulevard, fountains, and mountain views. From here, head to the South Park: wide paths, playgrounds, lawns. On the way, stop by the National Museum "Earth and Man" with a collection of giant crystals: a mineralogical exhibition rare for Europe, in a historic building.

Day 6 — Sofia: Oborishte and the Military History Museum

  • 🚶 The Oborishte district means boulevards, the Doctors' Garden, and calm facades. The key point is the National Museum of Military History: inside — a chronology of the Bulgarian army; outside — an open-air площадка with equipment. Afterward — an unhurried route through quiet streets to the Doctors' Monument and an evening in the area's bars and bistros.

Day 7 — Vitosha: Aleko and Cherni Vrah

  • ⛰️ Mountain day. Take the bus to Aleko Hut and then follow marked trails to the summit of Cherni Vrah (2290 m) — panoramas over all of Sofia. An alternative is "Zlatnite Mostove" (Golden Bridges) as a gentler option for a picnic and easy trails. Plan for 5–7 hours including travel, a snack, and breaks; watch the weather and the transport timetable.

Day 8 — Boyana: the National History Museum and Boyana Church

  • 🖼️ At the foot of Vitosha are two must-sees. The National History Museum in a former government residence: from prehistory to modern times. Nearby is Boyana Church (UNESCO) with frescoes from 1259 — an intimate masterpiece of medieval painting. If you wish, add a trek to Boyana Waterfall (2–2.5 h round trip).

Day 9 — Day trip: Plovdiv

  • 🚆 Plovdiv is the oldest city in Europe, with a wonderful Old Town and the Kapana district. From Sofia, direct trains and buses are convenient (roughly 2–3 hours one way). Plan for the day: the ancient theater, the Old Town streets, galleries and craft shops in Kapana; in the evening — back to Sofia.

Day 10 — Sofia: the Natural History Museum and "small discoveries"

  • 🦋 The National Museum of Natural History has a hall of birds, insects, and mineralogy. After that — Slaveykov Book Square and the courtyards around Graf Ignatiev Street: cafes, posters, vintage. In the evening — terraces by Alexander Nevsky or gastrobars in Lozenets.

Day 11 — Sofia: science and kids — TechnoMagicLand and Muzeiko

  • 🧪 If you're traveling with kids (or you yourself love hands-on), combine the interactive center TechnoMagicLand (Sofia Tech Park) and Muzeiko — the largest children's science center in the region. It's an "easy" day with practical experiments and contemporary architecture.

Day 12 — Sofia: museums of your choice and neighborhood parks

  • 🏛️ Catch up on what you missed: the National Ethnographic Museum in the eastern wing of the former palace, the Polytechnic Museum (retro tech and demonstrations), the Sofia Synagogue (outside/inside according to the schedule). For breaks — Zaimov Park and Doctors' Garden.

Day 13 — Day trip: The Seven Rila Lakes (seasonal)

  • ⛰️ The Seven Lakes of Rila are a classic one-day trek. In summer and the shoulder seasons there are shuttles from Sofia to the Panichishte chairlift, travel time 1.5–2 hours; up top there are well-marked trails—plan 4–6 hours including ascent/descent and photo stops. In bad weather, swap it for an extra day on Vitosha/in museums.

Day 14 — Day trip: Rila Monastery and a finale in the center

  • ⛪ Rila Monastery is Bulgaria’s main spiritual symbol in a picturesque Rila valley (2–2.5 hours each way by car/transfer). Frescoes, arcades, museum halls, and mountain air. In the evening return to Sofia—one last loop around your favorite central spots and a farewell dinner.
