🧭 DAY-BY-DAY ITINERARY

Day 1 — Bratislava: Old Town and the Danube embankment

  • 🚶 Start getting to know Slovakia in the cozy historic center of Bratislava. From Hviezdoslavovo námestie, turn toward Hlavné námestie, peek into the courtyards of old townhouses, climb Michael’s Gate Tower—the only preserved city gate—and by the town hall linger on the tower’s viewing terrace for a panorama of tiled rooftops. Along the way you’ll meet the city’s bronze “residents”—the worker Čumil, a Napoleonic grenadier, and the “Schöner Náci.” At sunset take a stroll along the Danube embankment: from here the castle and the modern skyline of the Ružinov district look beautiful; if you like, go up to the UFO viewing deck on the SNP Bridge—the city is especially lovely at dusk.

Day 2 — Bratislava Castle and Janko Kráľ Garden

  • 🚶 Bratislava Castle is the capital’s calling card: a snow-white fortress on a hill that houses the exhibitions of the History Museum of the Slovak National Museum. In the courtyard there are formal terraces with views of the Danube and the Little Carpathians. On the way back down, stop by the oldest public park in Central Europe—Janko Kráľ Garden in Petržalka: shady alleys, a “Gothic” gazebo, and a view of the old center across the river make perfect scenery for a leisurely break.

Day 3 — Devín Castle and the Morava confluence

  • 🚶 Just 20–25 minutes from the center, the ruins of Devín Castle offer a powerful landscape: high cliffs where the Danube and Morava meet, and medieval walls that survived Napoleonic bombardment. From the lower gate, trails lead to the “Maiden Tower” on the edge of the cliff; below lies the cozy village of Devín with wineries and slow-simmered goulash. On the way back you can stop at the Sandberg sandy cliff—an ancient seabed with a panorama of Austria.

Day 4 — Art: SNG and Danubiana

  • 🚶 Morning—visit the renovated Slovak National Gallery on the Danube embankment: bright spaces, a permanent collection, and strong temporary exhibitions. Afternoon—head out to the Danubiana Museum of Contemporary Art on a peninsula in the middle of the Danube near Čunovo: glass, concrete, wind, water, and open-air sculptures. The museum terrace is one of the most beautiful places to see the sun off over the water.

Day 5 — Little Carpathian Wine Route: Pezinok/Modra and Červený Kameň Castle

  • 🚶 A day dedicated to the Little Carpathian wine region. In Pezinok or Modra, drop by a wine museum or a cellar for a tasting, and then visit Červený Kameň Castle: massive Renaissance storehouses, enfilades of aristocratic halls, and forest trails around the fortress. A calm, scenic day before moving on to the mountains.

Day 6 — Transfer to the Tatras and getting to know the resort

  • 🚆 Transfer: Bratislava → Poprad‑Tatry (ZSSK InterCity/express): ≈ 3h45–4h10; then the narrow-gauge TEŽ: Poprad‑Tatry → Starý Smokovec ≈ 15–20 min, or → Tatranská Lomnica ≈ 17–30 min. We recommend reserving seats on IC trains in high season.

  • 🚶 Upon arrival, take an easy walk around the resort: Starý Smokovec with Art Nouveau alpine villas, or Tatranská Lomnica with views of Lomnický štít. In the evening—hot pool/sauna at the hotel and planning your mountain days.

Day 7 — Lomnický štít: cable cars and out-of-this-world views

  • 🚶 A Tatra classic: ride up from Tatranská Lomnica by gondolas via Štart and Skalnaté pleso to the upper station and then to the summit of Lomnický štít (2634 m)—one of the best viewpoints in the Carpathians. Book tickets for the final segment with the tiny cabin in advance on the operator’s website; at the top there are viewing platforms and an observatory, with panoramas of ridgelines and lakes.

Day 8 — Štrbské Pleso: a lakeside loop and forest perspectives

  • 🚶 The loop trail around the glacial lake Štrbské Pleso is a gentle warm-up route: mirror-smooth water, reflections of spruces and snowy peaks. If you wish, extend the walk to Jamské pleso or climb for panoramas near Skalnaté. In the evening—hot tubs/spa and dinner with lake views.

Day 9 — Hrebienok and the Studený Potok waterfalls

  • 🚶 From Starý Smokovec, take the funicular in 7 minutes to Hrebienok. Then— a network of trails to the Studený Potok waterfalls: the Obrovský, Malý and Veľký waterfalls hide among moss and stone revetments. The route is easy to vary to your strength; you can walk back down on foot.

Day 10 — Slovak Paradise: Suchá Belá Gorge (day hike)

  • 🚗 In the morning—drive to the village of Podlesok (entrance parking lots and an info center). The route through Suchá Belá Gorge is the most famous in the national park: wooden ladders, metal rungs and footbridges in a deep canyon among waterfalls and emerald pools. The gorge is passable only upstream; return via a forest road. Plan 3–4 hours of walking time plus another hour for photos/snacks.

Day 11 — Transfer to Košice and the old town

  • 🚆 Transfer: Poprad‑Tatry → Košice (ZSSK, IC/express): ≈ 1h20–1h40, trains run about once an hour. From the station it’s a 10–12 minute walk to St. Elisabeth Cathedral on the main street.

  • 🚶 Košice greets you with the Gothic St. Elisabeth Cathedral, the “Singing Fountain,” the theatre, and a string of cafés and pastry shops in historic buildings. The atmosphere is Central European—intimate and made for strolling.

Day 12 — Košice museums: the “Golden Treasure” and prison casemates

  • 🚶 The East Slovak Museum—one of the oldest in the country—houses the legendary “Košice Golden Treasure” (the exhibit may be temporarily closed for renovation—check in advance). Then head to Mikluš Prison: a Gothic prison complex with the “Executioner’s Apartment,” where medieval life is felt quite literally in the creak of the floorboards underfoot.

Day 13 — Spiš Castle and Levoča (day trip from Košice)

  • 🚗 Set off for one of Europe’s largest castle complexes—Spiš Castle. White travertine ramparts, approaches, the bergfried, and views of the surrounding hills make this place the headline attraction of eastern Slovakia. It’s easy to add Levoča to the same loop, with Master Paul’s Square and the town hall. Plan a full day for the round trip including visits.

Day 14 — Košice at an unhurried pace: gallery and coffee shops

  • 🚶 A final leisurely day: the East Slovak Gallery (modernist collections and current exhibitions), walks in the City Park, and a last cup of coffee with a view of the cathedral spires. In the evening—farewell dinner and preparations for departure/transfer.
