🧭 DAY-BY-DAY ITINERARY

Day 1 — Košice: old town, Gothic architecture and an evening on Hlavná

  • 🚶 Košice is the ideal gateway to eastern Slovakia for those who want to combine a beautiful European city with active nature without exhausting transfers. The historic center here does not feel like a museum set: it is lively, walkable, and surprisingly cohesive. Hlavná, the main street, stretches through the heart of the old town like a long open-air urban salon: pastel facades, cafés under arcades, fountains, shady stretches, and a sense of an unhurried rhythm. Start your route at St. Elisabeth Cathedral, the largest Gothic church in Slovakia. Its mass, carved decor, and tower verticals set a dramatic tone for the whole walk, while nearby stand St. Michael’s Chapel and the State Theatre, forming one of the country’s most beautiful urban ensembles. During the day the center is great for a relaxed introduction, and in the evening it becomes especially pleasant: the singing fountain turns on, the terraces grow livelier, and the light on the old stone makes the city unexpectedly romantic.

  • 🚶 After check-in, leave time for rest and gentle acclimatization: on the first day it is better not to overload the schedule, especially if hikes through gorges and ladders lie ahead. A logical sequence is Hlavná → cathedral → theatre → fountain → side streets of the old town, occasionally turning into quiet courtyards and passages. If you still have energy, climb the Urban Tower viewpoint or simply linger in the square by the cathedral to catch the city’s evening atmosphere. Košice is convenient precisely because the main impressions here do not require rushing: most of the beautiful spots are within a short walking distance, and the center is easy to experience as a relaxed stroll rather than a race between sights.

Day 2 — Košice: museums, gallery and the city’s cultural depth

  • 🏛️ Dedicate the second day to Košice’s cultural layer, which perfectly complements yesterday’s architectural walk. Start with the East Slovak Museum, one of the region’s main museums, known among other things for the exhibition of the Košice Gold Treasure. This place helps explain why the city has always been not a periphery but an important trading and cultural hub. Then it makes sense to continue to Miklušova väznica, Mikluš Prison, a historic complex with a darker and more intimate atmosphere. Here Košice reveals itself not as a beautiful facade, but as a medieval city of guilds, law, punishments, and the everyday life of past centuries.

  • 🎨 After the museum part, switch to Východoslovenská galéria, the East Slovak Gallery, which balances the route well with a modern visual experience and a quieter, more contemplative rhythm. A day like this is especially fitting before the nature-focused part of the trip: you do not overwork your legs, but you enrich the journey with substance. In the evening, return to Hlavná once again, have dinner in the center, and go to bed early: the next day it is best to start early, because the most popular routes in Slovak Paradise are more comfortable in the morning, when there are fewer people and your energy is still fresh.

Day 3 — Slovak Paradise: Suchá Belá, ladders, water and a forest canyon

  • 🚆 Early departure: Košice → Hrabušice / Podlesok area. A practical option without a car is by train from Košice to Poprad-Tatry or Spišská Nová Ves, then by bus toward Hrabušice/Podlesok. Depending on the specific connection, the journey usually takes about 2–2.5 hours one way with a transfer. For maximum flexibility you can arrange a transfer or rent a car for the day, but the route is also realistic by public transport with an early start.

  • 🥾 Suchá Belá is the most famous and one of the most spectacular gorges in Slovak Paradise, and it is the best place to begin your introduction to the park. This is not “just a trail in the forest,” but almost an adventure route where an ordinary walk turns into a sequence of footbridges, boardwalks, metal steps, narrow passages along the stream, and climbs beside cascades. Here the journey is felt physically: you hear the water, the wood after the morning damp smells of resin, and the gorge walls sometimes close in and sometimes open to let in a little more light. The gorge is walked one-way upstream, so nature itself sets the rhythm: at times you walk calmly along a forest ledge, and at others you focus on a ladder, holding the rail and feeling the damp metal under your feet.

  • 🌲 The main charm of Suchá Belá is that the route combines accessibility and vividness. It is not mountaineering, but it is not a walk in a city park either: you need a confident step, good trekking boots, and readiness for wet sections. For the main route with stops, photos, and a calm pace, it is sensible to allow 3.5–5 hours depending on the loop you choose, plus travel and rest time. In summer and in the warm months from May to September, it is best to start early to avoid crowds at ladders and waterfalls. After leaving the gorge, do not rush back: it is very pleasant to pause at the tourist center in Podlesok, have something hot or cold depending on the season, and simply sit among the forest, letting the route “settle in.”

Day 4 — Slovak Paradise: Tomášovský výhľad and Prielom Hornádu

  • 🚆 It is best to make the second nature day less vertical, but no less beautiful: once again, leave Košice early toward Slovenský raj. If the day in Suchá Belá was adventurous, today’s route is built around panoramas and a long, very scenic forest walk. The optimal combination is Tomášovský výhľad and a section of Prielom Hornádu. The starting points depend on transport, but the logic of the day is simple: first reach the famous rocky viewpoint, then walk part of the canyon along the river.

  • 🌄 Tomášovský výhľad is one of the symbols of Slovak Paradise, a broad limestone ledge above the Hornád valley. This place does not impress with Alpine-style height, but it makes a very strong impression through its composition: the forest opens up, and suddenly before you appears open space, air, rock, and a gently unfolding panorama. It is the kind of place where you want to linger, not just take a photo. It is especially beautiful in the morning — fewer people, cleaner light, quieter forest. From there you can continue to Prielom Hornádu, one of the park’s most famous sections, where the trail at times runs almost right beside the river, and on some stretches is built on metal brackets fixed directly into the rock.

  • 🌿 Prielom Hornádu gives a completely different feeling from Suchá Belá. There is less ladder-driven excitement here, but more of a long natural rhythm: the water flows beside you, the canyon walls sometimes overhang, the trail bends, and the route feels like a large walking journey rather than a series of obstacles. For the combination of viewpoint and canyon, it is sensible to allow nearly a full day including approaches, pauses, and the return journey. It is a good finale to the active part of the trip: you see Slovak Paradise not only as a set of “cool ladders,” but as a complete landscape of forests, limestone, rivers, gorges, and viewpoints. In the evening, return to Košice and enjoy a calm dinner in the center — a well-deserved reward after two full days on your feet.

Day 5 — Košice: final city day, easy walks and departure

  • 🚶 It is worth keeping the last day lighter and more flexible. After two hiking days, the body usually needs a calmer rhythm, so it is ideal to return to the city format: a late breakfast, an unhurried walk, souvenirs, coffee, and a few final spots you did not manage to see in the first days. You can visit the East Slovak Gallery again, browse the bookshops and designer stores in the old center, sit by the fountain, or simply make one more loop along Hlavná, now experiencing the city as a familiar place. If you want a short final cultural note, choose one museum or limit yourself to an exterior look at the cathedral and theatre ensemble in daylight.

  • ✈️ If you are flying out from Košice International Airport, allow extra time and choose a simple transfer: DPMK bus to the airport, taxi, or a ride booked through an app. If you are leaving by train, it is convenient to head to the station by public transport or a short taxi ride. This five-day route turns out very balanced: Košice offers architecture, cafés, and a cultural layer, while Slovak Paradise gives a real sense of natural adventure with gorges, ladders, wooden walkways, and forest trails. It is precisely in the combination of city and national park that this trip reveals itself best.
