🥾 ROUTE BY DAY

Day 1 — Sion: Bisse de Clavau and vineyard terraces above the Rhône Valley

  • 🥾 On the first day, begin your introduction to Valais with one of the region’s most beautiful yet accessible walks — Bisse de Clavau. This is a trail along a historic irrigation channel among dry stone walls, terraced vineyards, and wide views over the Rhône Valley and Alpine slopes. The active part of the day is about 3–4 hours at an easy pace, roughly 8–10 km, with moderate elevation gain of around 200–300 m depending on the start and return point. Difficulty is moderate: the route is well known, marked, and popular, with no climbing sections, no glaciers, and no special equipment; an ordinary traveler only needs comfortable shoes, water, and sun protection. Along the way, you are not walking a wild high-mountain trail, but a safe pedestrian route along the bisse, where the main pleasure is the light, the vineyards, the dry warm air, and the beautiful panoramas. In May and June it is especially green here, while in July–September it is important to set out early because of the heat: this slope is considered very sunny and dry. After rain, the stone sections and dirt path can be slippery, and in late October it is worth checking the trail condition and transport schedules in advance. Overnight in Sion so as not to overload the first day with transfers.

Day 2 — Saint-Léonard: a calm walk through the vineyards and the underground lake

  • 🌿 On the second day, the route logically continues east to Saint-Léonard — a small wine-growing location between Sion and Sierre. In the morning, take a short train ride, then enjoy a walk along rural lanes and through vineyards around the village with views of the valley, dry slopes, and historic bisses. This is an easier day to keep the linear tour at a comfortable pace: the active walk usually takes 2–3.5 hours, roughly 6–8 km, with a small or moderate elevation gain of 100–250 m. Difficulty is easy / moderate. A day like this suits an ordinary traveler well, because the routes around Saint-Léonard follow well-known paths among vineyards and village trails without technical obstacles. A natural addition to the outdoor part is Lac Souterrain de Saint-Léonard — the famous underground lake, which is easy to reach on foot; this is not hiking in the strict sense, but a natural attraction that fits the day’s theme very well. It is important to keep in mind that visits to the lake run on a schedule, so it is better to plan your visit time in advance. In the hot months, this part of the valley is also very warm and dry, and in the shoulder season after rain, dirt sections through the vineyards can be slippery. Overnight in Saint-Léonard or nearby, so that the next day you can conveniently set out for the longer walk toward Sierre.

Day 3 — Sierre: Sentier viticole from Sierre to Salgesch through vineyards and a nature park

  • 🍇 The third day is the main continuation of the vineyard hiking theme: Sentier viticole / Wine Trail between Sierre and Salgesch. This is one of the region’s best-known walks, created specifically for walking through the wine-growing landscape of Valais. The active part of the day is about 2–3 hours of actual walking, roughly 6 km, with gentle rolling ascents and descents; elevation gain is usually small, around 150–250 m. Difficulty is easy / moderate. The route is suitable for ordinary travelers without special training: it is short, popular, easy to navigate, and requires neither a helmet, nor safety gear, nor mountain trekking skills. Along the way, vineyards, viewpoints, stretches near the Pfyn-Finges nature park, and the very characteristic dry sunny slopes of central Valais alternate. It is a good day for unhurried walking with stops for photos and rest. It is important to remember the seasonal nuances: in the height of summer there is almost no shade on the open sections, so you need a supply of water and an early start; also, official tourist resources sometimes publish temporary closures of individual sections due to rockfalls, branches, or works, so it is worth checking the current trail status before setting out. Overnight in Sierre.

Day 4 — Sierre and Pfyn-Finges: Finges forest, Lake Géronde, and a gentle end to the tour

  • 🌲 The final day is devoted not only to vineyards, but also to another face of the region — the nature of Parc naturel Pfyn-Finges. It is best to choose a walk in the Bois de Finges area and, if you wish, add a short loop by Lac de Géronde. This is a contrasting day: instead of terraced vines, there is dry pine forest, the Rhône riverbed, protected biotopes, and a shadier environment. For an ordinary traveler, the best option is a lighter walk of 3–4.5 hours, about 8–12 km, with minimal or moderate elevation gain of 50–200 m. Difficulty is easy / moderate. This area is especially good because it offers high-quality marked routes without technical difficulty and without the need for special equipment, while still giving a real sense of a nature journey. In the nature park, it is important to follow the rules: do not leave the marked route, do not swim in streams, do not light fires in the forest, keep dogs on a leash, and take your trash with you. In May and early June, it is pleasant to walk here all day; in July–August, heat once again becomes an important factor, but the forest provides more shade than the vineyard slopes. This day conveniently completes the linear route in Sierre, from where it is easy to continue onward by train through Switzerland.
