🧭 DAY-BY-DAY ROUTE

Day 1 — Moscow: Red Square and Zaryadye

  • 🚶 Your first introduction to Moscow is on Red Square: the cobblestones, the Kremlin walls, and the colorful domes of St. Basil’s Cathedral create the feeling of a living postcard. Head to Zaryadye Park via Varvarka Street: beyond the glass “Floating Bridge” a panorama of the Kremlin and the Moscow River opens up, and themed landscapes (“forest,” “steppe,” “tundra”) gently сменяют each other. In the evening, drop by GUM—under the glass arcades it’s pleasant to stroll even without shopping, and the illuminated facades of the square set a magical tone for the whole trip.

Day 2 — Moscow: The Kremlin and the Armoury Chamber

  • 🚶 The grounds of the Moscow Kremlin are cathedral squares with gilded domes and a one-of-a-kind concentration of state history. Be sure to set aside time for the Armoury Chamber: royal regalia, the throne of Alexei Mikhailovich, coronation robes, and the famous Fabergé eggs. We recommend booking your visit time slot to the Armoury in advance—the exhibition is compact but very rich, and it’s best to go in the first daytime slot. After your walk around the Kremlin, head down to Alexander Garden to see fragments of old walls and the Eternal Flame.

Day 3 — Moscow: Tretyakov Gallery, Muzeon, and Gorky Park

  • 🚶 The historic building of the State Tretyakov Gallery on Lavrushinsky Lane is the heart of Russian painting: from Rublev’s icons to 19th-century masterpieces. Then take a walk along the embankment to “Muzeon”: an open-air sculpture park, benches by the water, and a view of the Krymsky Bridge. End the day in Gorky Park: perfect for cycling, a picnic by the embankment, and a sunset with a view of the Moscow River.

Day 4 — Moscow: VDNH, the Museum of Cosmonautics, and the Ostankino TV Tower

  • 🚶 At VDNH, the avenues of pavilions lead to the “Friendship of Peoples” and “Stone Flower” fountains, and the retro architecture contrasts spectacularly with modern exhibitions. Nearby is the Museum of Cosmonautics by the “Conquerors of Space” monument: authentic spacecraft, capsules, and artifacts tell how the country opened up space. In clear weather, go up to the Ostankino Tower observation deck—the 360° panorama of the capital impresses even seasoned travelers.

Day 5 — Moscow: Kolomenskoye and an evening on the river

  • 🚶 The Kolomenskoye Museum-Reserve features the hilly banks of the Moscow River, apple orchards, and the white-stone Church of the Ascension (a UNESCO site). Wooden palaces, log houses, and the quiet of the old tsar’s village create a rare feeling of coziness in a мегаполисе. In the evening, take a river cruise: the lights of the embankments, Stalinist skyscrapers, and bridges are especially beautiful after sunset.

Day 6 — Day trip: Sergiev Posad and the Lavra

  • 🚶 Sergiev Posad is a sacred point of the Golden Ring for Russian history. Within the walls of the Holy Trinity St. Sergius Lavra, bells ring out, blue and gold domes shine above the squares, and the Trinity Cathedral holds the relics of St. Sergius of Radonezh. On the grounds you’ll find cozy refectories, монастырские kvass, and craft stalls; take a pause for quiet rest and contemplation.

Day 7 — Transfer to Saint Petersburg, Nevsky Prospekt

  • 🚆 Transfer: Moscow (Leningradsky Station) → Saint Petersburg (Moskovsky Station) on the “Sapsan” high-speed train: ≈ 3h 35m–4h, frequent departures throughout the day. The stations are in the city centers; you can bring luggage on board like on a regular train; seating only.

  • 🚶 First evening—along Nevsky: Gostiny Dvor, Anichkov Bridge with griffins, Kazan Cathedral. Have tea in one of the historic cafés or drop into the courtyard-wells—here the city shows its more intimate face.

Day 8 — Saint Petersburg: The Hermitage and the Palace Embankment

  • 🚶 The country’s main museum on Palace Square is an entire city of art. Walk through the Jordan Staircase, linger over Rembrandt and Leonardo, and then head out to the Neva embankment: the Admiralty, the Spit of Vasilyevsky Island, and the arrows of the bridges create the perfect postcard of the Northern Capital.

Day 9 — Peter and Paul Fortress, Savior on Spilled Blood, and the Summer Garden

  • 🚶 On Zayachy Island at the origins of Petersburg are the bastions of the Peter and Paul Fortress and the cathedral with the Romanovs’ burial vault. Then head to the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood: mosaic icons and colorful domes seem to float above the Griboyedov Canal. End the day in the Summer Garden: the geometry of alleys, marble sculptures, and a light languor of a northern park.

Day 10 — Day trip: Peterhof

  • 🚶 The Lower Park of Peterhof is a kingdom of fountains, cascades, and linden alleys. In summer the jets “fire” every hour, and the “trick” fountains delight children; in the off-season, enjoy the luxurious interiors of the Grand Palace and walks by the Gulf of Finland.

  • 🚆 Logistics: from the center—hydrofoil (seasonal) from Palace Embankment ~35–45 minutes; or an electric train from Baltiysky Station to “Novy Peterhof” station ~45 minutes + bus/on foot to the park 15–20 minutes.

Day 11 — Day trip: Pushkin (Tsarskoye Selo)

  • 🚶 Catherine Palace — a celebration of Russian Baroque splendor and the legendary Amber Room. The formal park with sculptures and mirror-like ponds is ideal for a leisurely stroll. On the way back, you can drop by Pavlovsk — an intimate palace-and-park ensemble in the spirit of an English landscape garden.

  • 🚆 Logistics: commuter train from Vitebsky Station to Tsarskoye Selo station ~30–40 minutes + bus/minibus to the palace 15–20 minutes; taxi from central St Petersburg ~45–60 minutes depending on traffic.

Day 12 — St Petersburg: The Russian Museum and the Fabergé Museum

  • 🚶 The Russian Museum in the Mikhailovsky Palace is a continuous history of national art from icons to the avant-garde. Then — the Fabergé Museum in the Naryshkin-Shuvalov Palace on the Fontanka: imperial Easter eggs and jewelry marvels in the interiors of a St Petersburg mansion.

Day 13 — Day trip: Veliky Novgorod

  • 🚆 Transfer: “Lastochka” from St Petersburg (Moskovsky Station) → Veliky Novgorod: ≈ 2h 45m–3h 10m, several departures a day. Convenient for a packed itinerary.

  • 🚶 Novgorod Kremlin (Detinets) — ancient walls above the Volkhov and the 11th-century St Sophia Cathedral. Walk to Yaroslav’s Court on the Trade Side — the arcades of the princely court, white-stone churches, and the unhurried rhythm of an old merchant city.

Day 14 — Kronstadt and a farewell evening on the Neva

  • 🚶 Russia’s maritime capital on the Kronstadt Dam: the majestic Naval Cathedral of St Nicholas, views of the Gulf of Finland, and walks around the forts. Back in the center, see off the sunset on the embankment — the city is especially beautiful in the evening light.
