🚗 DAY-BY-DAY ROUTE

Day 1 — Würzburg: an easy start along the Main

  • 🚗 Start and end of the day: Würzburg → Würzburg. Approximate distance around the city and nearby points: 20–35 km, actual driving time: about 40–60 minutes. This is a gentle entry day into the trip: pick up your rental car, get used to German road markings, parking machines, and city traffic, then explore baroque Würzburg without rushing. Main stops: Würzburg Residence, Marienberg Fortress, and the promenade by the Old Main Bridge. For the historic center, it is more convenient to leave the car in official parking lots and walk: narrow streets and a limited number of spaces make the center less pleasant for maneuvering. For motorhomes in Würzburg there is Wohnmobilstellplatz an der Friedensbrücke, but it is important to keep in mind that the site may temporarily close due to city works, so it is best to keep Campingplatz Kalte Quelle as a backup option. Staying overnight in Würzburg itself makes sense: it allows you not to rush after the road or a flight. Road nuances: there is no vignette in Germany on this section, but in the center you need to pay close attention to parking zones and time-based payment; in the evening it is easier to park than during the day. The day is realistic for an average driver because it does not require a long transfer and leaves time to rest after picking up the car.

Day 2 — Würzburg → Weikersheim → Rothenburg ob der Tauber

  • 🚗 Start of the day: Würzburg. End of the day: Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Approximate distance: 95–115 km, actual driving time: about 1 hr 45 min – 2 hr 15 min depending on the chosen approach and stops. This is one of the most beautiful and at the same time very comfortable sections of the Romantic Road: the vineyards of Franconia gradually give way to the Tauber valleys and small towns. Main stops along the way: the castle and gardens of Schloss Weikersheim, a short walk around Weikersheim market square, and, if you like, a panoramic stop in the Tauber valley. It is best to arrive in Rothenburg in the second half of the day, when you can already check in, park the car, and explore the old town on foot. For a regular passenger car, the outer parking lots by the walls of the old town are convenient; for motorhomes there is a parking system with separate large areas, and in the old part of town there are restrictions for tall vehicles. It is best to stay overnight in Rothenburg: in the evening the town is especially atmospheric, and in the morning you can walk the walls before the excursion crowds arrive. Road nuances: the road is easy, mostly regional, but not fast; average speed is lower than it looks on the map. The day is realistic because the transfer is short, and the stop in Weikersheim gives you a break without overloading the schedule.

Day 3 — Rothenburg ob der Tauber: old town day and motorhome parking areas

  • 🚗 Start and end of the day: Rothenburg ob der Tauber → Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Approximate distance: 10–25 km, actual driving time: 20–40 minutes. This day is intentionally left almost without long driving so that the route does not turn into a race. Main stops: a walk along the town walls and gates, viewpoints above the Tauber valley, and also one of the campgrounds or a stellplatz as an example of good infrastructure for motorhomes. In the Altstadt itself there is a general parking ban for motorhomes, and vehicles higher than 2.85 m are subject to a special entry regime, so it is better to head straight for the large parking lots P2 or P3 or for campgrounds in the valley. During the day you can make a short trip to Taubertal and return for a second night in Rothenburg. Staying overnight in Rothenburg again is convenient both for a hotel stay and for camping: there is no need to pack up in the morning, and you can spend the evening in the historic center at a relaxed pace. Road nuances: the center is very touristy, and on the narrow streets it is better not to look for parking on your own; it is easier to park outside and walk 10–20 minutes. The day is realistic for an average driver because it gives a full rest between two intercity transfers.

Day 4 — Rothenburg → Dinkelsbühl → Füssen

  • 🚗 Start of the day: Rothenburg ob der Tauber. End of the day: Füssen. Approximate distance: 235–260 km, actual driving time: about 3 hr 30 min – 4 hr 20 min. This is the longest driving day of the route, but it is still realistic if you leave after breakfast and do not try to squeeze in too many stops. Main stops: Dinkelsbühl for a walk through its beautifully preserved old town and a short service break farther south at one of the highway service stations. In Dinkelsbühl it is convenient that there are outer parking areas by the old town rather than a mandatory drive inside the walls. After lunch the road gradually leads into pre-Alpine landscapes, and the last kilometers become noticeably more scenic. In Füssen it is best to stay at least two nights: from here it is convenient to drive to the castles, the lakes, and the waterside campgrounds without changing base every day. Road nuances: part of the route is faster on federal roads and autobahns, but closer to the Alps there can be summer traffic jams due to tourists; it is more convenient to refuel before the southern section, where there are fewer stations around the lakes. The day is realistic because it is the only truly long transfer, and it is balanced out by two nights in Füssen.

Day 5 — Füssen, Hohenschwangau, and the lakes: castles, parking, campgrounds

  • 🚗 Start and end of the day: Füssen → Füssen. Approximate distance: 35–60 km, actual driving time: about 1–1.5 hours. Main stops: Hohenschwangau and the parking areas by the castles, Alpsee or viewpoints near Schwangau, then Hopfensee or Forggensee for a calmer second half of the day. An important nuance: you cannot drive to Neuschwanstein itself — the roads to the castles are closed to regular private traffic, and cars are left in the official Hohenschwangau parking areas. Motorhomes are allowed to park only at P2, which is especially important to keep in mind when traveling by camper. Tickets for the interior tours are best booked in advance on the official site, because the place is extremely popular. After the castles, a contrasting plan works perfectly: leave the crowds behind for the lakes, walk by the water, and check out real campgrounds — Camping Hopfensee and Camping Brunnen at Forggensee. It is best to stay overnight again in Füssen or at one of the lakeside campgrounds if you are traveling by motorhome. Road nuances: access roads are good, but parking lots fill up quickly in high season; it is best to arrive early in the morning. The day is realistic because all points are close to each other and do not require tiring driving.

Day 6 — Füssen → Wieskirche → loop around Forggensee and end of the route

  • 🚗 Start of the day: Füssen. End of the day: Füssen or car return in the region / transfer toward Munich depending on your onward plan. Approximate distance: 65–95 km for a circular route around the area, actual driving time: about 1 hr 30 min – 2 hr. Main stops: the pilgrimage church Wieskirche, one of the lakeside stretches of Forggensee, and a short detour into Hopfen am See or Weissensee. This day is designed as a beautiful and very calm finale to the trip: less urban bustle, more Alpine panoramas, meadows, water, and views of the foothills. At Wieskirche there is public parking by the access road, so the stop is especially convenient for drivers. You can then make a loop along the local roads and end the route by the lake, where it is easy to arrange a long lunch or a walk before departure. If you are traveling by motorhome, it is more convenient to spend the last night at an official parking area or campground rather than looking for an informal overnight spot: in Bavaria this is a bad idea and often prohibited. Road nuances: local roads are good, but narrow in villages; in rain and fog in the pre-Alpine area, it is worth driving more calmly and allowing extra time for photo stops. The day is realistic for an average driver because it is a short scenic loop without difficult mountain passes and without time pressure.
