🧭 DAY-BY-DAY ROUTE

Day 1 — Old Town: Republic Square and Plzeň’s “tall needle”

  • 🚶 Start at náměstí Republiky — the city’s proper, almost Renaissance square. In the center stands St. Bartholomew’s Cathedral with a 102+ meter spire: the narrow stairs up the tower are rewarded with views of red rooftops and the Radbuza River. Walk around the Renaissance Town Hall, the three modern fountains — “Angel,” “Potter,” and “Sickle” — and slip into quiet alleys with historic portals. By evening, take an unhurried loop along the embankment to the “Plzeň Venetians” of Mlýnská strouha: water, granite, tree shadows, and the first sips of local pilsner.

Day 2 — Pilsner Urquell: the legend, the brewhouse, and icy underground cellars

  • 🍺 The main encounter is the Pilsner Urquell brewery tour (≈ 100 minutes). First, the visitor center’s museum halls: how “pilsner” was born in 1842. Then the glass and chrome of the modern brewhouse, the scale of bottling, and the climax — the historic lager cellars, where unfiltered Urquell is poured from an oak barrel: a dense malt aroma, gentle Žatec Saaz bitterness, and a completely different foam texture. Lunch is right on the complex grounds or in one of the classic pubs nearby; in the evening, walk back to the center to “assemble” the technology and taste in your head.

Day 3 — The Brewery Museum and the Historic Underground

  • 🏛️ The Brewery Museum, in a house that preserved its medieval brewing rights, shows how people drank and brewed “before industry”: malt houses, vats, merchants’ stories, and rare artifacts. From the museum, go straight into Plzeňské historické podzemí: a network of wells, icehouses, and passages under the Old Town that saved residents during sieges and helped beer mature in ideal cold. Back on the surface, the day’s “beer chevron”: Na Parkánu taproom for a leisurely snack and a tasting of bright lager balance.

Day 4 — Techmania and industrial Plzeň

  • 🔧 In former Škoda workshops — the Techmania science center: interactive halls, engineering installations, a 3D planetarium. It’s a day “about curiosity”: touch, turn, launch, and also feel how industry shaped Plzeň. Afterwards, a short walk to Mlýnská strouha and a coffee pit stop: the city by the water sounds quieter than on the squares.

Day 5 — Jewish heritage: the Great Synagogue

  • ✡️ The Great Synagogue, the second largest in Europe, features facades of red and pale stone, onion domes, and a warm acoustic volume inside: today it hosts exhibitions and concerts. It’s about memory, resilience, and the beauty of craftsmanship. On the way, notice the “small signs” of remembrance in the cobblestones, and frame the day with a late lunch at one of the bistros on Sady Pětatřicátníků.

Day 6 — Park and pace: Borský Park, alleys and sports

  • 🌿 A pause and a change of rhythm. Borský Park has winding paths, pines, runners, tennis courts, and playgrounds. Easy to reach by tram/trolleybus; grab a coffee and do your loop along the shady alleys. In the evening, walk along the Radbuza: a cityscape with bridges and reflections.

Day 7 — Liberation and memory: Patton Memorial Pilsen

  • 🎖️ The Patton Museum tells the story of the arrival of the U.S. 3rd Army and the liberation of western Bohemia: authentic items, photos, an advance map, and veterans’ “voices.” Afterwards, walk to memorial points around the center and drop by the neighborhoods near Škoda Works, where Plzeň’s industrial power is felt most strongly.

Day 8 — Craft breweries: Purkmistr and beer baths

  • 🍻 Outside the center is the Purkmistr brewery courtyard in the Černice district: copper brew kettles, a restaurant with Czech classics, and “beer baths” for relaxation. It’s a day of “slow beer”: a tasting set (pale/semi-dark/special brews), local snacks, and a walk through the courtyard galleries.

Day 9 — New wave: Raven and Zlatá kráva Bandaska

  • 🦅 Raven is the Plzeň craft school (APA, IPA, sour styles, and seasonal experiments). For contrast, try “Zlatá kráva Bandaska” in the center: a lively bistro with a lineup from the Nepomuk brewery; get a tasting flight and see how local craft argues with classic pilsner.

Day 10 — Kozel Castle: park, pavilions, and pastoral calm

  • 🏛️ A half-day trip to the Kozel Neoclassical hunting lodge: light architecture, enfilades, hunting trophies, and a park with long vistas. Ideally, take a calm walk across the lawns and paths around it; back in town, dinner with tender goulash and a pale 12°.

Day 11 — Radyně: hilltop ruins and a view of Plzeň

  • 🏰 Medieval Radyně above Starý Plzenec — ruins, forest trails, and a panorama worth every step of the climb. On the way back, stop by a wine bar or a small pub — this day is about air and horizons.

Day 12 — Plasy Monastery: baroque, water, and silence

  • ⛪ In Plasy, the Cistercian monastery stands “on water”: a complex system of foundations and water channels—an engineering marvel of its era. The interiors, exhibitions, and a walk through the ensemble offer a rare pause for contemplation on a route with so much beer and urban history.

Day 13 — West Bohemian Gallery and small finds

  • 🖼️ Two venues of the West Bohemian Gallery—Masné krámy and “13” on Pražská—alternate big themes with intimate exhibitions. Afterwards: bookshops, design stores, and coffee in the lanes around náměstí Republiky. In the evening: “pilsner as it should be”—a properly poured hladinka in a classic pub.

Day 14 — Finale: the center once more, the tower, dinner, and a farewell glass

  • 🌇 Take one last lap of honor: the square, the cathedral, your favorite courtyard, and the riverside. Climb the tower (if you didn’t on the first day), and in the evening arrange a dinner with local dishes—from svíčková to škvarková pomazánka—and a toast to a city where taste and history go hand in hand.
