Day 1 — Entrance 1 / Rastovača: Lower Lakes, canyon, and Veliki Slap
- 🥾 On the first day, focus on the Lower Lakes: this is the most photogenic and at the same time the most straightforward part of the Plitvice trails for an ordinary tourist — forest, limestone canyon, boardwalks above the water, cascades, and the main waterfall Veliki Slap. A realistic option for a 2-day tour is to walk from Entrance 1 using the official short or medium route for the lower zone. The active walk usually takes ≈ 3–4 hours at an easy pace, and with photo stops and rest it is convenient to plan half a day or a little more. In terms of difficulty, this is an easy walk, in places closer to easy-moderate because of stairs and uneven stone/wooden sections; the distance is roughly ≈ 4–8 km, with elevation gain usually small, up to ~150–200 m total depending on the chosen loops and viewpoints. This day is well suited to a tourist without special equipment because the route follows the park’s official boardwalks and marked paths, with no technical sections, no difficult navigation, and no need for trekking gear. It is better to arrive early in the morning, while the light is soft and there are fewer people on the narrow boardwalks. In the hot season, it is more comfortable to start before noon: humidity near the water increases the feeling of heat, and on open viewpoints you should bring water and sun protection. After rain, boards and stone can be slippery, so shoes with good grip are especially important. In season, it is better to book tickets in advance and enter through exactly the official entrance and time slot chosen when purchasing. If you want a very relaxed pace, after the main loop you can leave time for viewpoints above the canyon and an early rest back at base.
