🧭 DAY-BY-DAY ITINERARY

Day 1 — Arrival in Naples: tuning in to antiquity at MANN

  • ✈️ Arrive at Napoli Capodichino (NAP) and transfer to the center (Alibus to Napoli Centrale/Porto Beverello or an official taxi with a fixed fare). Check in and walk around the historic quarter. In the evening — Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli (MANN): South Italian vase painting, sculpture, and Roman collections — an ideal “prologue” to Magna Graecia.

Day 2 — Transfer to Salerno: a seaside prologue to Paestum

  • 🚆 Naples → Salerno by train (≈ 40–60 min, from Napoli Centrale to Salerno). A stroll along the seafront, the old town, and bay panoramas. In the evening — preparation for the ancient block: reading Paestum site plans, planning an early start.

Day 3 — Paestum: first encounter with the temple field

  • 🚆 Salerno → Paestum (Regionale ≈ 30–45 min). From the station to the archaeological park — walk ≈ 10–15 min along Via Magna Graecia. First walk among Doric giants: the “Basilica” (Temple of Hera I, 6th c. BCE), the Temple of Neptune/Hera II (mid-5th c. BCE), and the Temple of Athena on the northern rise. At sunset the stone “warms up” — the ideal time to feel the proportions of the peripteral temple and the play of light in the triglyphs and metopes.

Day 4 — Paestum: the city as a system — forums, streets, amphitheater

  • 🚶 In the morning — a loop along the perimeter of the preserved fortification wall (almost 5 km) with towers and gates (Porta Sirena, Porta Marina). Inside — the forum, curia, residential quarters, and amphitheater: the relief and street grid help you “read” the Greco-Roman transformation of the city from Poseidonia to Paestum.

Day 5 — Paestum: National Archaeological Museum (Tomb of the Diver)

  • 🏛️ A day at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Paestum: the frescoes of the “Tomb of the Diver” (5th c. BCE), archaic sculpture, metopes from the sanctuary at the Sele, punitive and dedicatory inscriptions. After the museum, return to the temples: knowledge of the decoration and polychromy enhances the perception of the ruins.

Day 6 — Sanctuary of Hera at the mouth of the Sele (Heraion del Sele)

  • 🚌 A short trip to the Heraion alla Foce del Sele (≈ 25–35 min by taxi/car from Paestum). Here are traces of the sanctuary and a “Narrative Museum” (part of the Paestum–Velia Park; check visiting hours in advance). The link “city — extra-urban sanctuary” matters: pilgrimage roads, votive terracottas, the sacred seascape.

Day 7 — Velia (Elea): philosophers and the “gateway” Porta Rosa

  • 🚆 Paestum → Ascea (≈ 30–50 min by regional train) + taxi/shuttle ≈ 10 min to the entrance of the Elea-Velia Park (Piazzale Amedeo Maiuri). Walk through the lower town and climb to the acropolis: Porta Rosa — an early stone arch, terraces, theater, Castellammare della Bruca tower. Velia is the city of Parmenides and Zeno, where the spatial logic of the acropolis connects with sea panoramas.

Day 8 — Velia and the Cilento coast: a day of “light and relief”

  • 🚶 Morning return to the park for soft light on the ruins; then — the beaches of Ascea Marina and nature trails of the Cilento National Park. In the evening — a tasting of buffalo mozzarella and the region’s olive oils: gastronomy as part of the cultural landscape.

Day 9 — Agropoli and sea panoramas

  • 🚆 Paestum ↔ Agropoli (train ≈ 6–12 min): the old town on a cliff, the Angevin-Aragonese castle, views over the Gulf of Salerno. After lunch — swimming at Lido Azzurro or returning to Paestum for an evening temple photo session.

Day 10 — Cilento: the national park and “antiquity in nature”

  • 🚗/🚌 Route through the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni Park: viewpoints over the coast, the limestone ridges of the Alburni, rural sanctuaries. The point of the day is to see how ancient poleis “worked” in connection with mountains, forests, and harbors.

Day 11 — Return to Naples + Herculaneum (optional)

  • 🚆 Paestum → Napoli Centrale (usually 1h 20m–1h 50m with/without a transfer via Salerno). With an early arrival — a midday visit to Parco Archeologico di Ercolano: a compact excavation, preserved organic materials and interiors — a vivid continuation of the region’s ancient thread.

Day 12 — Naples: finale and departure

  • 🚶 Morning coffee on Via Toledo or in the Museum quarter; a repeat visit to the short galleries of MANN inspired by the trip. ✈️ Transfer to NAP (Alibus/fixed-fare taxi).
