🚲 ROUTE BY DAY

Day 1 — Eindhoven → Nuenen: first ride in Van Gogh’s footsteps

  • 🚲 Start in Eindhoven, finish in Nuenen. About 28–34 km depending on the loop through the center and green neighborhoods; actual riding time about 2–2.5 hours; elevation gain is symbolic, roughly up to 40–60 m for the day. The surface is very comfortable: urban and suburban cycle paths, quality asphalt, short stretches of quiet local roads, and park paths. For a gentle start, it’s convenient to leave central Eindhoven via the waterfronts and green parts of the city, then follow the iconic connection toward Nuenen, including the famous Van Gogh-Roosegaarde Cycle Path between the Eindhoven area and Nuenen. Main stops along the way: Van Abbemuseum or a short coffee break in central Eindhoven, the glowing Van Gogh-Roosegaarde route itself, and then the Van Gogh Village Museum in Nuenen. Water and food are easiest to restock in the morning in Eindhoven and then again in Nuenen near the museum area and the village’s central streets. It’s best to stay overnight in Nuenen so you can calmly walk to places connected with the artist without having to return to the city in the evening. Road notes: the route is generally safe and flat, but in the city you need to read the markings carefully because in some places the bike lane runs next to buses and pedestrians; the glowing path is especially beautiful at dusk, but for an actual ride you still need your own front and rear lights. The day is realistic for an average tourist because the distance is short, the terrain is flat, and the stops are frequent and culturally rich — this is more of a leisurely cycling day than a sporty transfer.

Day 2 — Loop route from Nuenen: villages, church, watermill, and rural Brabant

  • 🚲 Start and finish in Nuenen. About 38–45 km; actual riding time about 2.5–3.5 hours; elevation gain minimal, approximately 50–80 m. Surface: mostly dedicated cycle paths, asphalt, short rural sections on quiet roads, and in places compact dirt or very light gravel on natural stretches along the water and green corridors. This is the main Van Gogh day of the tour: first you explore the locations in Nuenen itself — Van Gogh Kerkje, the surroundings of the parsonage, historical spots connected with the artist’s works — then the route heads to Opwettense Watermolen on the Kleine Dommel River, where the landscape becomes especially picturesque, and then returns via rural roads and green sections toward Nuenen. Main stops: Van Gogh Village Museum, Van Gogh Kerkje, and Opwettense Watermolen. For water and food, cafés and shops in central Nuenen work well, as does the restaurant/terrace by the watermill; in warmer months it is wise to carry extra water because services are less frequent between the village sections. It makes sense to spend a second night in Nuenen again so the route stays easy and lets you take your time in museums and at photo stops. Road notes: it can be windy even on short open field sections, after rain the compact dirt inserts ride more slowly, and around popular spots there can be more leisurely foot traffic on weekends. The day is realistic for an average cycle tourist because almost the entire route runs through cycling country at its most comfortable: flat, safe, and with many ways to shorten the loop if you get tired or the weather turns bad.

Day 3 — Nuenen → Eindhoven through green districts and an easy return to the station

  • 🚲 Start in Nuenen, finish in Eindhoven. About 30–36 km with a nice return loop through green zones and urban cultural districts; actual riding time about 2–3 hours; elevation gain again minimal, around 40–70 m. Surface: cycle paths, urban asphalt, park sections, and quiet suburban streets. In the morning, it’s worth leaving Nuenen at a relaxed pace and heading back toward Eindhoven on convenient bike connections, with the option to ride the Van Gogh-Roosegaarde section once more in daylight or, on the contrary, save it for early morning in soft light. Upon arrival in Eindhoven, you can make a final cultural stop at preHistorisch Dorp or simply finish the tour near the station, where it is convenient to return a rental bike or transfer to a train. Main stops: rural departure views near Nuenen, a second pass through the Van Gogh-Roosegaarde Cycle Path as a symbol of the whole journey, and Eindhoven’s park zone/museum district. Water and food are convenient to stock up on in Nuenen before departure, then later in Eindhoven’s urban districts. It’s best to stay overnight in Eindhoven if you have a train or flight the next day: it makes logistics, bike storage, and an early departure easier. Road notes: the closer you get to central Eindhoven, the more local bike traffic there is, so it’s better to ride calmly and predictably; in rain, cobbled or painted sections can be slippery. The day is realistic for an average tourist because it is a short and flat return without overload, with good infrastructure and a clear finish near transport.
