🧭 DAY-BY-DAY ROUTE

Day 1 — Altstadt-Lehel: Marienplatz, the Town Hall, and Munich’s first brushstroke

  • 🚶 Start at Marienplatz: the Gothic New Town Hall with its figurative Glockenspiel sets the tone for the old town. Walk to Frauenkirche — the reddish-brown towers orient you like a “beacon.” Head down to Viktualienmarkt: the bustle of fresh markets, cheese and sausage stalls — a perfect snack at the high standing tables. Through the shady Hofgarten, come out to the quiet Isar embankment and return to the old town via narrow lanes. In the evening — a short stop at a classic beer garden at Wiener Platz (Hofbräukeller): oak tables, chestnuts overhead, and a neat “first toast” to getting to know the city.

Day 2 — Kunstareal I: Alte/Moderne/Brandhorst

  • 🖼️ An art concentrate in the Kunstareal district. Choose a “classic base + modern”: in the morning, the Alte Pinakothek — the golden core of European painting; after coffee — the Pinakothek der Moderne (four collections under one roof: contemporary art, graphic art, design, architecture); the final chord — Museum Brandhorst with its colorful facade and a strong contemporary collection. Take breaks in museum cafés and in the inner garden of the nearby Lenbachhaus. In the evening — Augustiner-Keller: a huge shady garden, legendary “Helles,” and the feeling of a proper Munich evening.

Day 3 — Deutsches Museum and the museum island on the Isar

  • 🔧 The world’s largest science and technology museum on an island in the Isar — a place where steam engines, airplanes, laboratories, and models tell the story of engineering. Plan: 3–4 hours “inside” with a focus by interests (aviation, physics, space, mining), then a leisurely walk along the water. On the way back, stop by Isartor and the old lanes. In the evening — the Chinesischer Turm in the Englischer Garten: live music, a round tower, long rows of tables, and the classic flow of locals.

Day 4 — The Wittelsbach Residence and courtly splendor

  • 👑 Residenzmuseum: enfilades, gold, and the Renaissance Antiquarium — a museum “about power and taste.” Add the Treasury and, if it’s open, the Cuvilliés Theatre — lacquered red velvet and gold in miniature. Afterward — a walk through the Hofgarten to the river. Dinner and a jellied sunset sky — Seehaus by Kleinhesselohe in the Englischer Garten: water, boats, reflections, and very “Munich calm.”

Day 5 — Olympiapark and BMW: speed, lines, panorama

  • 🏁 Morning at BMW Welt and the BMW Museum — from retro coupes to visionary prototypes; the architecture around the “four cylinders” headquarters makes everything feel even more futuristic. Next — Olympiapark: hills, lake, suspended stadium roofs, and a climb up the Olympic Tower (views of the Alps on clear days). In the evening — back to the classics at Augustiner-Keller or a leisurely dinner by the water in Olympiapark if you want to stay “in the landscape.”

Day 6 — Königsplatz: ancient Munich

  • 🏛️ Königsplatz is King Ludwig I’s dream of an “Athens of the North.” Go into the Glyptothek (classical sculpture, warm stone halls) and the Staatliche Antikensammlungen (Greek ceramics, glass, jewelry). Between the museums — classical facades and even rows of trees. Finish — a glass in the nearby Lenbachhaus café or a short walk to one of the beer gardens close by.

Day 7 — Nymphenburg: palace, parks, and Hirschgarten

  • 🌿 Nymphenburg Palace — mirror-like canals, park pavilions, long vistas. After the museum — a big loop through the palace’s English garden: ducks on the water, statues in greenery, silence. At sunset — Königlicher Hirschgarten: the world’s largest beer garden, chestnuts, open sky, and family bustle — the perfect “down-to-earth” counterbalance to courtly luxury.

Day 8 — NS Documentation Center and the city of memory

  • 🕯️ The NS Documentation Center in Munich is an important and challenging museum. The exhibition gathers context, facts, and the regime’s local topography. Afterward — a walk around Königsplatz and a short stop at a nearby café to reset. In the evening — a quiet beer garden at Wiener Platz (Hofbräukeller): string lights, leaves, conversations — life that’s stronger than dark pages.

Day 9 — Schwabing and a big loop through the Englischer Garten

  • 🌳 A day of air and greenery: start at Eisbachwelle — surfers on a permanent wave in the city center. Next — a long route through the Englischer Garten: lawns, bridges, chestnut shade. Bring your own lunch — in Munich it’s customary to bring food into a Biergarten (except drinks). To finish — Chinesischer Turm or Seehaus: choose by mood — music and crowds or mirror-like water and silence.

Day 10 — Lenbachhaus and the “Blue Rider”

  • 🎨 The Lenbachhaus collection — Kandinsky, Marc, Münter, and different facets of early modernism in an artist’s villa. The inner garden is ideal for a coffee break. By day — a walk through Maxvorstadt: bookstores, cafés, the geometry of the blocks. In the evening — light beer-garden classics in one of the gardens near Isartor/Residenz.

Day 11 — Jewish Museum, Viktualienmarkt, and urban flavors

  • ✡️ Jüdisches Museum München on St.-Jakobs-Platz offers a calm, human perspective on the community’s history. Afterward — a snack at Viktualienmarkt (soups, cheese, pastries) and a bit of shopping along the old town’s lanes. In the evening — a glass in a small city beer garden or high bar — “little Munich” without a mandatory program.

Day 12 — Free day: catch up on favorite museums

  • 🗓️ Go back to what hooked you: at Pinakothek der Moderne it’s always easy to find a new gallery; at the Deutsches Museum you can spend another half-day and not notice. Breaks—in city parks (Hofgarten/Englischer Garten), the finale—a leisurely dinner.

Day 13 — Beer garden tour

  • 🍻 Route “three styles”: 1) Augustiner-Keller — historic heft and scale; 2) Chinesischer Turm — the lively pulse of the Englischer Garten; 3) Hofbräukeller am Wiener Platz — a cozy “neighborhood” vibe. Between stops—tram/walking segments, lots of greenery and conversations. Rule of the day: drink water, take breaks, and go at your own pace.

Day 14 — Farewell loop: views, water, the last glass

  • 🌇 A short respect loop: Marienplatz → the Isar embankment → your favorite square in the Altstadt. If the day is clear—Olympiaturm viewpoint or just a hill in Olympiapark. Finale—a quiet dinner and a toast to a city that skillfully combines world-class museums and wonderfully homey beer gardens.
