Day 1 — Waren (Müritz): old town, harbor, and a first introduction to the lake region
🚗 / 🚆 If you arrive via Rostock-Laage Airport, allow about 1 hr 40 min – 2 hr 10 min for the trip to Waren (Müritz) by car or taxi; by public transport the journey is usually longer and requires transfers. If you arrive by train, Waren is convenient as a starting base: it is one of the main transport hubs of the lake plateau.
🚶 Waren (Müritz) is one of the most atmospheric towns of the Mecklenburg Lake Plateau, a place where North German restraint unexpectedly blends with an almost resort-like lightness. Its old town with neatly restored facades, narrow streets, and church towers does not make a loud impression — it works differently: it calms, opens up your breathing, and shifts the trip into a slow and very pleasant rhythm. Here you do not want to rush through a list of sights; on the contrary, the best way to feel Waren is to walk unhurriedly from the market square to the harbor, peeking into side alleys, along the waterfronts, and toward old warehouse buildings that now sit beside cafés, excursion piers, and waterside terraces.
⚓ Waren’s town harbor is the living stage of the whole region. Yachts, excursion boats, and private craft sway at the piers, gulls glide above the water, and the view of Müritz creates that very feeling of a vast inland sea for which the lake is loved. Müritz is the largest lake located entirely within Germany, and it is here in Waren that its scale is felt especially well: the horizon line widens, the light reflects off the water almost like at the sea, and the wind carries the scent of grass, wood, and the damp shore. In the evening the harbor is especially beautiful: soft northern light, the ringing of masts, and the quiet urban murmur create a sense of rest that does not need to be filled with anything.
☕ On the first day, it is best not to overload the plan. After checking in, it is worth leaving 2–3 hours for a leisurely walk through the Altstadt and along the Stadthafen, then taking a long pause for dinner by the water or in the center. This is an important adaptation day: the region reveals itself not through rushing, but through contemplation. If you still have energy, end the evening with a short walk along the promenade at dusk — it is one of the best ways to understand the mood of the whole trip.
