🧭 DAY-BY-DAY ROUTE

Day 1 — Luxembourg City: Grund, the Alzette, and the Bock Casemates

  • 🚶 Start getting to know the city by diving into the valleys of the Alzette and Pétrusse rivers—go down in the Pfaffenthal glass elevator (views of the Passerelle viaduct and the city bastions), walk through the medieval Grund quarter with its whitewashed houses and terraces above the water. Next—enter the underground world of the Bock Casemates: corridors and embrasures inside the rock reveal cinematic views of the valley and the Clausen quarter. In the evening—stroll along the Pétrusse: slopes, the Adolphe Bridge, and the soft lighting on the walls make the walk very cinematic.

Day 2 — Luxembourg City: forts and museums in Kirchberg

  • 🚶 Head up to the Kirchberg plateau—the heart of modern Luxembourg with European institutions and museums. The Dräi Eechelen Museum is located in a restored part of Fort Thüngen: bastions, powder magazines, and a panorama of the old town. Nearby are Mudam (contemporary art) and the lawns of Dräi Eechelen Park, where the traverses of the ramparts descend into the valley. End the day in Ville Haute (the Upper Town): Place Guillaume II, the MNHA courtyard with its arcades, and evening streets with wine bars.

Day 3 — Moselle Valley: Remich and Schengen

  • 🚶 Vineyards and river promenades—a completely different pace of the country. Morning—Remich: an easy walk along the Moselle esplanade, boats, cascades of plane trees, and a crémant tasting. Afternoon—Schengen: a tiny town where the free-movement agreement was signed, a museum under a glass roof, and two sections of the Berlin Wall on the square. Sunset—from one of the “Koeppchen” viewpoints above the valley (vine terraces sweep down to the river in broad arcs).

Day 4 — Transfer to Mullerthal: abbey town of Echternach

  • 🚆 Transfer: Luxembourg City → Echternach. RGTR 111/211 or 191: ≈ 50–65 minutes from the station area/Kirchberg to Echternach, Gare Centre.

  • 🚶 Echternach is the oldest town in the country and the “gateway” to Mullerthal. The Abbey Basilica of St. Willibrord houses a crypt with the missionary’s relics, and the Abbey Museum under the palace vaults tells how dazzling manuscripts were created in the scriptorium. Walk along the shore of Lake Echternach to feel the approach of “Little Switzerland”—ahead are days of rocks, moss, and babbling brooks.

Day 5 — Mullerthal: the Schiessentümpel waterfall and Route 2

  • 🚶 A regional classic—the Schiessentümpel waterfall with its stone footbridge and three streams. From the parking area on CR121, trails quickly lead into canyons: sandstone corridors, “cracks” and grottos, damp moss, tree roots like ropes. Walk a section of the Mullerthal Trail Route 2: gentle ups/downs, wooden boardwalks, and cliffs above the Black Ernz create a fairy-tale geological stage set. Return to Echternach for dinner and an unhurried evening walk around the old market.

Day 6 — Beaufort castles and the Berdorf rocks

  • 🚶 Morning—Beaufort’s ensemble of two castles: a stern medieval fortress and an elegant Renaissance residence, linked by the history of the Beck family. Then—a short trip to Berdorf: viewpoints above the “stone labyrinth,” giant ledges, arches, and “windows” into green valleys. Return to Echternach to rest. This is the last evening in the “valley of rocks.”

Day 7 — Transfer to Vianden: a fortress above the Our valley

  • 🚆 Transfer: Echternach → Vianden via the Ettelbruck hub. RGTR 191 (Echternach → Diekirch/Ettelbruck) + RGTR 181 (formerly 570) to Vianden: total ≈ 1h 20m–1h 40m.

  • 🚶 Vianden Castle is one of the most impressive west of the Rhine. White walls, buttresses, and crenellated lines dominate the loop of the Our River. In the palace halls—exhibits about the Counts of Nassau, the Romanesque chapel, and the restoration of the ruins in the 20th century. By cable car (seasonal, from March 27) soar up to the ridge: views of the old town’s tiled roofs and the castle “crown.” In the evening—warm lantern light along the river.

Day 8 — Our Valley: trails, viewpoints, and quiet villages

  • 🚶 A day for trails along the slopes of the Our valley: a loop through forest and scenic meadows to an old watch hut and heather clearings. There are several “postcard” angles on the castle, but the best is from the terrace above the right bank, where the towers rise straight out of a green bowl. Lunch—in town: local soups, trout, tarts. After—a short visit to the Victor Hugo Museum or a walk along the promenades to the stone arches of the old bridge.

Day 9 — Bourscheid: Luxembourg’s largest fortress

  • 🚆 Transfer: Vianden → Bourscheid/Esch-sur-Sûre via Ettelbruck. RGTR 181 → Ettelbruck hub, then local buses to Bourscheid/Plage or to Esch-sur-Sûre: depending on the destination ≈ 1h 15m–1h 35m.

  • 🚶 Bourscheid Castle is a huge triangular perimeter on a 150-meter spur above the Sûre. Round towers and wall crenellations look down on the winding river; from the battlement terraces there’s a panorama of the soft hills of Éislek. In the evening—the riverbank at Bourscheid-Plage or the atmospheric lanes of Esch-sur-Sûre beneath the fortress ruins.

Day 10 — Upper Sûre Nature Park: the lake, viewpoints, and tranquility

  • 🚶 A day of unhurried relaxation: trails above the Upper Sûre lake, pine sections, and coves with mirror-like reflections. Climb up to the ruins of Esch-sur-Sûre (free entry)—stone walls on a rocky spire “hang” over narrow lanes, and the river loops around the town. By midday—picnic in one of the panoramic meadows. Evening—spa and dinner with a view of the water.

Day 11 — Clervaux: “The Family of Man” and the white castle

  • 🚆 Transfer: Esch-sur-Sûre/Bourscheid → Clervaux. Bus to Ettelbruck → CFL Line 10 train to Clervaux: ≈ 1h 20m–1h 40m.

  • 🚶 The snow-white walls of Clervaux Castle hide Edward Steichen’s legendary photo collection “The Family of Man” (the collection’s re-exhibition is a calling card of Luxembourg). Nearby is a quiet center with a Benedictine abbey and café terraces. In the evening—a walk through the Clerve valley, where the railway disappears into green tunnels.

Day 12 — Our and the northern valleys: Urspelt or scenic trails

  • 🚶 Option 1: the castle-hotel in Urspelt—a walk along alleys and hills on the border of the Our Nature Park, dinner under stone vaults. Option 2: a loop hike along the heights of the Clerve valley—fields, pastures, and wide views of the dark-green ridges of the Éislek. An unhurried rest day after busy transfers.

Day 13 — Diekirch and the chronicle of the Ardennes Offensive

  • 🚆 Transfer: Clervaux → Diekirch (CFL Line 10): ≈ 35–45 minutes.

  • 🏛️ The National Museum of Military History in Diekirch is one of the most in-depth exhibitions on the “Battle of the Bulge”: large-scale dioramas, vehicles, letters, uniforms, the story of the crossing of the Sûre in January 1945. Afterward—coffee on the square and a train to Luxembourg (≈ 30–40 minutes). Evening—a final walk through the Ville Haute and a restaurant with a view over the Pétrusse valley.

Day 14 — Luxembourg City: final chord and departure

  • 🚶 Morning—light shopping around Guillaume II, viewpoints by Notre-Dame Cathedral and a last descent to the Grund riverside promenade. Time-wise—lunch and transfer to the airport: now directly on tram T1 to “Findel – Luxembourg Airport” without changes (or bus 29 to the station/center). A wonderful journey through castles and valleys is complete.
