🚗 DAY-BY-DAY ROUTE

Day 1 — Nice: a gentle start by the sea

  • 🚗 Start in Nice, finish in Nice. About 32 km for the day, with pure driving time around 1 hour 15 minutes. This is an acclimatization day after the flight and picking up the car: it’s convenient to collect the vehicle at Nice airport, drive to the hotel, leave your bags, and do a short loop along the seafront and viewpoints. Main stops: Promenade des Anglais, Colline du Château, and Port Lympia. In the historic center, it’s better not to try driving every little street: it’s more sensible to leave the car in a parking garage near the center and walk. If you want a beach start, it’s best to look for and reserve a spot at the city beaches in the morning, because the coast fills up quickly during the day. Overnight — Nice. Road nuances: dense traffic in the center, many one-way streets, expensive parking, and the seafront and center are overloaded in high season. The day is realistic for an average driver because there’s no long transfer after the flight, and you can calmly get used to French road markings, roundabouts, and city traffic.

Day 2 — Nice → Villefranche-sur-Mer → Antibes → Cannes

  • 🚗 Start in Nice, finish in Cannes. About 35 km direct, but with stops and local detours allow around 55–60 km; pure driving time is 1.5–2 hours. Leave early in the morning and make a short stop in Villefranche-sur-Mer for its postcard-perfect bay, then continue to Antibes: the old town, Port Vauban, and Cap d’Antibes fit well into a driving day without overload. After lunch, transfer to Cannes. Main stops: Villefranche-sur-Mer, old Antibes, La Croisette. Overnight — Cannes. Road nuances: traffic along the coast is often slower than it looks on the map; it’s easier to reach beaches and capes in the morning while there are parking spaces and before the peak heat. In Cannes, it makes sense to use large parking garages rather than look for a street spot. The day is realistic because the distance is short but the impressions are many: it’s not a marathon, but a comfortable coastal road trip.

Day 3 — Cannes → Esterel → Fréjus/Saint-Raphaël → Saint-Tropez

  • 🚗 Start in Cannes, finish in Saint-Tropez. About 90 km, with pure driving time around 2 hours 30 minutes excluding stops. This is one of the most beautiful driving days of the route: after a morning walk in Cannes, head out along the coastal road through Théoule-sur-Mer and the Esterel massif, where red cliffs plunge sharply into the blue sea. Along the way, 2–3 stops make sense: viewpoints on the Corniche d’Or, a beach break near Agay or Saint-Raphaël, and a short coffee stop in Fréjus. Then continue toward the Gulf of Saint-Tropez. Overnight — Saint-Tropez or the nearby Grimaud/Gassin area if you want something a bit easier for parking. Road nuances: the road along the Esterel is scenic but winding in places; only stop at viewpoints where it is officially permitted. In high season, the entrance to Saint-Tropez is often stuck in traffic, so it’s better to plan your arrival for closer to evening. The day is realistic because the mileage is moderate and the main stops fit logically along one scenic drive.

Day 4 — Saint-Tropez and the peninsula: beaches, ports, and a relaxed day without rushing

  • 🚗 Start in Saint-Tropez, finish in Saint-Tropez. About 45 km for the day, with pure driving time 1–1.5 hours. The morning is best devoted to the old port and citadel, then head out to Pampelonne or toward Ramatuelle and Cap Taillat for a more natural part of the route. If the goal is the beach, it’s best to take parking near the popular beaches in the morning; otherwise daytime traffic and looking for a spot can eat up half the day. Main stops: Port of Saint-Tropez, the citadel, the Pampelonne area or viewpoints near Ramatuelle. Overnight — Saint-Tropez/Gassin/Grimaud. Road nuances: even short drives here can take longer because of narrow roads, heavy scooter traffic, and seasonal queues. On the peninsula, it’s more efficient to move around without constantly repositioning the car: one long beach stop and one city walk work better than five short ones. The day is realistic because after the beautiful but busy day through the Esterel, a lighter rhythm is needed.

Day 5 — Saint-Tropez → Sainte-Maxime → Toulon/La Ciotat → Cassis

  • 🚗 Start in Saint-Tropez, finish in Cassis or a suburb of Marseille/Martigues, depending on the base you choose. About 150 km, with pure driving time around 3 hours 15 minutes. This is the main transfer of the second half of the trip. To avoid turning the day into a tiring forced march, make 2 stops: a short break in Sainte-Maxime or Le Muy, then a lunch stop in La Ciotat or a look at the Route des Crêtes if weather and road conditions allow. Cassis is an excellent end to the day: a small port, pastel facades, and an evening atmosphere after the road. Overnight — Cassis or the Marseille metropolitan area. Road nuances: it is faster to do part of the route on toll motorways, but local roads and traffic return on the approaches to the coast. Route des Crêtes is a scenic road, but in windy weather or with temporary restrictions, it’s better not to complicate the day and go direct. The day is realistic because even with breaks it remains within the limits of a comfortable driving day for an average driver.

Day 6 — Cassis → calanques → Marseille

  • 🚗 Start in Cassis, finish in Marseille. About 50 km including local access roads, with pure driving time around 1 hour 30 minutes. In the morning, it’s a good idea to head to the official parking lots in Cassis or to the starting points for walks, then choose one realistic nature goal: viewpoints over the coves, a short hike, or a boat trip. After that, transfer to Marseille and spend the evening at the Vieux-Port. Main stops: Port de Cassis, viewpoints above the calanques, Vieux-Port in Marseille. Overnight — Marseille. Road nuances: access to the Calanques massif in summer is regulated according to fire conditions, and some roads have separate restrictions; before the trip, you need to check the daily access status. Parking at the calanques themselves is difficult, and in some areas you should not leave belongings in the car. In Marseille, it is easier to leave the car in a paid parking garage right away and continue on foot. The day is realistic because it combines a short scenic drive and one major city base without exhausting mileage.

Day 7 — Marseille and the Côte Bleue coast: the final driving day

  • 🚗 Start in Marseille, finish in Marseille or return the car at the airport/train station. About 170 km for the full loop through the Côte Bleue and back, or around 70–90 km in the lighter version; pure driving time 2.5–3.5 hours depending on the chosen loop. The most beautiful finale is to leave Marseille toward l’Estaque, Carry-le-Rouet, and La Couronne, see the wilder western coast, then return to the city via Martigues or end the day closer to the airport. Main stops: l’Estaque, Carry-le-Rouet, La Couronne/Côte Bleue coast. If you want a campground finale, it makes sense to look at accommodation in the La Couronne area, where there is a real seaside campground. Road nuances: this day is best done only if the flight is not too early; with a short final day, it is more sensible to shorten the route and stay within Marseille. There can be traffic jams at city entrances and around the port, and if returning the car, it is important to allow time for refueling and drop-off. The day is realistic because it is a flexible loop: it is easy to shorten for a flight schedule or keep full if you have the whole day.
