🥾 DAY-BY-DAY ROUTE

Day 1 — Monterosso: the classic coastal trail to Vernazza

  • 🥾 The main walk of the first day is the famous Sentiero Verde Azzurro SVA2 section from Monterosso al Mare to Vernazza. It features coastline, terraced slopes, olive groves, and panoramic spots above the sea. The active part of the day takes about 2–3 hours of pure walking, but with stops for photos, water, and viewpoints, it is better to allow half a day. The distance is about 3 km, elevation gain is approximately 180–220 m, and the difficulty is moderate: there are stone steps and climbs, but the route is very well known, marked, and suitable for a regular tourist without special gear if you have comfortable shoes and enough water.
  • In the morning, it is convenient to arrive by train from La Spezia to Monterosso, leave your things at the hotel, and start the trail early before it gets hot. The ascent begins almost immediately, then the path opens onto wide views of turquoise water, rocky coastline, and vineyard terraces. This is one of the most photogenic and at the same time one of the most straightforward hikes in the region: the trail is popular, easy to follow on the ground, and does not require navigation skills.

  • After arriving in Vernazza, you can relax in the harbor and return to Monterosso by train in just a few minutes, without repeating the route on foot. This makes the day comfortable and keeps the itinerary from feeling overloaded. Important seasonal nuances: in warm months it can be very hot with little shade; after heavy rain, some park sections may temporarily close; on part of the SVA between Monterosso and Vernazza, one-way traffic may apply on certain dates during peak hours, so check the trail status and access rules on the park website on the morning before departure. Access to paid trail sections usually requires a Cinque Terre Card.

Day 2 — Vernazza and Corniglia: panoramic hiking along the slopes of Cinque Terre

  • 🥾 The second day is devoted to the Vernazza → Corniglia section of the same Sentiero Verde Azzurro SVA2 system. In character, this is a coastal trail through a natural park with vineyard terraces, Mediterranean shrubs, and views of the cliffs. Active walking time is about 1.5–2.5 hours, distance is around 3.5–4 km, and elevation gain is approximately 200–250 m. Difficulty is moderate: the trail is not technical, but it has steps and exposed sunny sections.
  • It is convenient to start the day with a short train ride from Monterosso to Vernazza to walk the most scenic morning section to Corniglia. This walk is well suited to regular travelers: the route is part of the main national park network, it is popular, logical in direction, and at the end you do not need to make a long return hike — it is easy to leave Corniglia by train. Along the way there are especially beautiful views down over Vernazza, and closer to Corniglia you feel the calmer rhythm of a village set high above the sea.

  • After the main section, you can add an easy walk to the viewpoints around Corniglia and make the day more relaxed. If you want to reduce the effort, you can do only the main section and devote the rest of the day to rest. Seasonal nuances: in summer, a cap, water, and an early start are important; after rain the stone steps may be slippery; trail status, park card requirements, and possible local closures should be checked at station info points or on the official park website.

Day 3 — Riomaggiore and Manarola: an easy seaside walk along Via dell’Amore

  • 🥾 The third day is designed to be easier and more scenic: this is Via dell’Amore between Riomaggiore and Manarola, the iconic coastal route of Cinque Terre. In character, it is a short seaside walk along an equipped coastal path with views of rocks and the sea. The active part takes about 30–45 minutes of pure walking at an easy pace, the difficulty is easy, and there is almost no noticeable elevation gain. This is the best day for a final relaxed hike without overloading your legs.
  • The route is especially convenient for the average tourist: it is short, very popular, does not require special preparation, and even works as a half-day walk after two more active days. But it has one important feature: in 2026 access is organized by booking a time slot, and tourist passage usually goes one way from Riomaggiore to Manarola. So it is better to choose a time in advance and arrive a little early.
  • After walking Via dell’Amore, you can calmly stroll along the waterfronts and viewpoints of Riomaggiore and Manarola without turning the day into a rush. It is a good balance between nature and rest. Seasonal nuances: during heavy rain or after rockfalls access may change; in high season the most convenient time slots can be in demand; in hot weather even a short walk along the open coast feels more intense than the distance suggests, so it is still worth bringing water.
