🥾 DAY-BY-DAY ROUTE

Day 1 — Cortina d’Ampezzo / Misurina: panoramic hike around the Tre Cime di Lavaredo

  • 🥾 The main walk of the day is the classic Tre Cime di Lavaredo Loop starting from Rifugio Auronzo. This is a high-altitude but tourist-friendly and very popular trail across open alpine slopes, at the foot of the famous towers, with views of stone amphitheaters, scree basins, green meadows, mountain passes, and mountain panoramas of the Dolomites. For an average traveler, this is one of the best options in the region: the route is well known, marked, follows clear trails and roads without climbing sections, without via ferrata, and without special equipment in the normal summer season.
  • ⏱️ The active part of the day usually takes about 3.5–5 hours of walking at a relaxed pace with photo stops; if you add a long lunch at a rifugio and unhurried viewpoint breaks, it is convenient to allow 5–6 hours for the entire hike. In distance, the route is most often estimated at around 9–10 km, and the total elevation gain is about 350–450 m depending on the loop variation and small detours. Difficulty is moderate: technically the trail is not difficult, but the altitude above 2300 m and the duration require normal stamina.
  • 🚶‍♀️ A practical plan for the day is this: in the morning, leave Cortina d’Ampezzo for the Misurina / Lago d’Antorno area, then go up to Rifugio Auronzo by car on the toll panoramic road or by seasonal shuttle. From the hut, a wide comfortable section begins toward Rifugio Lavaredo, then the trail climbs to Forcella Lavaredo — one of the best viewpoints of the day, where the Tre Cime open up in an almost perfect angle. Then the route continues toward the Rifugio Locatelli area with legendary views of the northern faces of the peaks and then returns in a wide arc back to Auronzo.
  • 🌿 In character, this is not a forest hike but specifically a mountain panoramic walk through a high-altitude natural area with open views for almost the whole day. That is why the route is especially beautiful in clear weather, but it requires protection from sun, wind, and sudden temperature changes. Even in summer it may be cool in the morning, and storm clouds are possible after noon. It suits an average traveler because there is no need for a helmet, protection gear, snow trekking, or an overnight stay in the mountains; comfortable shoes with good soles, water, a light jacket, and an early start are enough.
  • 📍 If you want to make the day a bit easier, you can do a shortened version: Auronzo → Lavaredo → Forcella Lavaredo → back the same way. Then the active part will be closer to 2–3 hours, while the route will still be very scenic. The full loop is better chosen in stable dry weather and with an early arrival so you do not depend on the last bus and do not return to the parking area at dusk.
  • 🌦️ Seasonal details matter: the safest and clearest period for this kind of hiking is usually late June – September, but actual conditions depend on the snowpack each year. In May and early June, some sections may still be under snow or muddy, and in autumn early snowfall and strong wind are possible. For the 2026 season, it is worth checking access rules in advance for the road up to Rifugio Auronzo and for visiting the Tre Cime area, since restrictions on car flow and a seasonal shuttle apply in high season. If you are going by car, it is wise to check in advance whether a reservation is needed for the access road/parking on your chosen date.
  • 🌅 The best start time is early in the morning: there are fewer people, the light is softer for photos, and the chances are higher of completing the loop before daytime bad weather. Sunset in the Dolomites is very beautiful, but for a day trip without an overnight stay it is safer not to delay your return: it gets cold quickly at altitude, and transport back may be limited by schedule. After the walk, it is convenient to finish the day around Lago di Misurina with a short calm walk by the water or an early dinner in Cortina d’Ampezzo.
