🧭 DAY-BY-DAY ITINERARY

Day 1 — Arrival in Cologne/Bonn, Rheinauhafen and the Chocolate Museum

  • ✈️ Arrive at CGN. The best way to the center is the S‑Bahn S19 to Köln Hbf or Köln Messe/Deutz (usually 15–20 minutes nonstop). Check in and take an easy walk along the Rhine on the Rheinauhafen promenade between the “crane houses”.
🍫 Schokoladenmuseum Köln (Am Schokoladenmuseum 1A, 50678) — an interactive journey from cocoa beans to a real chocolate fountain. Kids love the glass mini-factory and tastings. Plan 2–3 hours, and afterwards — ice cream on the terrace with a view of the Rhine.

Day 2 — Cologne Zoo + cable car and Rheinpark

  • 🦁 Kölner Zoo (Riehler Str. 173, 50735) — one of Germany’s largest and most family-friendly zoos: Elephant Park, the Hippodom hippo house, a big playground, and terrariums. Do loops of 60–90 minutes with snacks and shade breaks.

  • 🚡 The Cologne cable car (Kölner Seilbahn) — a short “flight” over the Rhine that kids remember forever. On the right bank is the green Rheinpark: ponds, flowerbeds, the little “Bimmelbahn” trains, big playgrounds, and picnic spots. End the day with a calm dinner and an early night.

Day 3 — Water day: Aqualand Köln + playgrounds by the Rhine

  • 💦 AQUALAND Freizeitbad (Merianstraße 1, 50765) — warm pools, kids’ areas, slides, and a “lazy river”. A great reset day after active sightseeing. Bring flip-flops and towels; plan 3–4 hours. On the way back, make a short stop at Rheinpark for free play.

Day 4 — Brühl: Phantasialand (full day)

  • 🎢 Phantasialand (Berggeiststraße 31–41, 50321 Brühl) — a park with bright themed areas and lots of family rides. Strategy: in the morning — the most popular ones (to beat the lines), at midday — shows/lunch/gentle carousels, toward evening — revisit favorite zones. For little ones: Wuze Town and mini railways; for older kids: Taron, Chiapas, and interactive quests.

  • 🚆 Logistics: Köln Hbf → Brühl (RE/RB ≈ 15–20 min) + bus 985/706 to the stop by the park (≈ 15–20 min) or the branded seasonal shuttle. Allow an extra 20–30 minutes for waiting.

Day 5 — Bonn: science and nature (Deutsches Museum Bonn + Museum Koenig)

  • 🧪 Deutsches Museum Bonn (Ahrstraße 45) — hands-on science and modern technology: from robots and AI to practical experiments. Lots of interactivity for school-age kids.

  • 🦋 Museum Koenig (Adenauerallee 160) — lively, very visual exhibits about the animal world, a beautiful historic building, and a cozy museum garden. Getting between the museums is best by tram/metro; lunch — in one of the family cafés on the Museumsmeile.

Day 6 — Cologne: Wildpark Dünnwald + family picnic

  • 🦌 Wildpark Dünnwald (Dünnwalder Mauspfad 230, 51069) — a free forest enclosure park with deer, mouflon, and wild boar. For kids, a rare chance to see forest animals almost “like in a fairy tale”. Bring snacks, rain jackets, and binoculars; the paths are suitable for strollers.

Day 7 — Düsseldorf: Aquazoo Löbbecke Museum

  • 🐠 Aquazoo Löbbecke Museum (Kaiserswerther Str. 380, 40474 Düsseldorf) — an aquarium + natural history museum under one roof: seahorses, axolotls, tunnels, and “dry” halls about Earth and evolution. Perfect for 2–3 hours, then — the playground in Nordpark.

  • 🚆 Köln Hbf → Düsseldorf Hbf (RE ≈ 25–35 min) + U78/U79 to Nordpark/Aquazoo (≈ 10–15 min).

Day 8 — Wuppertal: the “flying” Schwebebahn + Zoo

  • 🚟 Wuppertaler Schwebebahn — the legendary suspended “flying” railway above the Wupper River: the ride itself is already an attraction for kids. Get off at Zoo/Stadion.

  • 🦒 Der Grüne Zoo Wuppertal (Hubertusallee 30, 42117) — a spacious zoo in a landscaped park with excellent enclosures, viewpoints, and shady avenues. Plan 3–4 hours with lunch on site.

  • 🚆 Köln Hbf → Wuppertal Hbf (RE ≈ 35–45 min) + Schwebebahn to Zoo/Stadion (≈ 10–15 min).

Day 9 — Oberhausen: SEA LIFE + LEGOLAND Discovery Centre (indoor day)

  • 🦈 SEA LIFE Oberhausen (Zum Aquarium 1, 46047) — Germany’s largest “shark nursery”, an underwater tunnel, and multimedia zones. Nearby is LEGOLAND Discovery Centre Oberhausen (Promenade 10): a mini city made of bricks, a 4D cinema, and building areas. A great combo for bad weather.

  • 🚆 Köln Hbf → Oberhausen Hbf (via Duisburg, ≈ 50–70 min) + tram/bus to “Neue Mitte” and a 10–15 minute walk through CentrO.

Day 10 — Cologne: Rheinpark in full and the city’s “vibe”

  • 🌿 A big day without rushing: playgrounds under the Zoobrücke, park trains, fountains, and lawns in Rheinpark. You can combine it with the warm pools at Claudius Therme (nearby) — about an hour to an hour and a half for each activity so the kids don’t get tired.

Day 11 — Königswinter: Drachenfelsbahn + SEA LIFE

  • 🛤️ The Drachenfelsbahn cog railway (Drachenfelsstraße 53) — a rack railway to the top of Drachenfels with views of the Rhine and Drachenburg Castle below on the slope. For kids, it’s a “train into the mountains” straight out of a storybook.

  • 🪼 SEA LIFE Königswinter (Rheinallee 8, 53639) — a compact aquarium on the promenade: rays, jellyfish, and hands-on “shore” touch pools. Great after the mountain ascent.

  • 🚆 Köln Hbf → Königswinter (RB27 ≈ 30–40 min) + 10–15 min on foot to the promenade and the funicular station.

Day 12 — Cologne: Blackfoot Beach (Fühlinger See) + ropes course

  • 🏖️ Blackfoot Beach (Stallagsbergweg 1, 50769) — the only legal beach at Fühlinger See with white sand, loungers, and a high-ropes course (by age/height). For little ones: beach and sand; for teens: SUP/kayaks and rope elements. Activity swap: water → snack in the shade → ropes course.

Day 13 — Leverkusen: Wildpark Reuschenberg

  • 🦊 A small, very cozy Wildpark Reuschenberg (Am Reuschenberger Busch 6, 51373) — roe deer, raccoons, birds, mini aviaries and petting areas, a café, and quiet paths. You can combine it with time at the playground and an early dinner.

  • 🚆 Köln Hbf → Leverkusen Mitte (S/RE ≈ 15–25 min) + bus/on foot to the park.

Day 14 — Cologne: farewell walk and souvenirs

  • 🛶 Wrap up the trip with a leisurely boat ride on the Rhine or a sweets-and-cocoa set run to the shop at the Chocolate Museum. Take a full family photo on the riverside with a view of Cologne Cathedral — the trip’s “final point”.
