🧭 DAY-BY-DAY ITINERARY

Day 1 — Phnom Penh: National Museum of Cambodia and a first look at Khmer heritage

  • 🚶 Start with the National Museum of Cambodia — it’s the best place to “learn the Angkor alphabet”: styles of Khmer sculpture, figures from Hindu and Buddhist pantheons, decorative fragments, ceramics, and inscriptions. The collection (prehistoric period → Angkor era → post-Angkor period) helps you later “read” temple reliefs and plans. After the museum, take a short walk to Wat Phnom hill (the city’s historic core) for a panorama of the river and colonial-era кварталы.

Day 2 — Phnom Penh: the Royal complex and the city as a stage of history

  • 🚶 In the morning — the Royal Palace grounds and the Silver Pagoda: ceremonial courtyards, galleries, and pavilions where you can see the synthesis of Khmer tradition and modern реконstructions. Pay attention to the composition of the enclosures, ornament, and how the ensemble connects to the Tonle Sap riverside. In the afternoon — a relaxed walk along the boulevards (Sisowath/Norodom): colonial-era facades, markets, and shady squares create a contrast to the temple architecture you’ll soon see in Siem Reap.

Day 3 — Transfer to Siem Reap + evening by the Angkor moat

  • ✈️/🚌 Transfer: Phnom Penh (Techo International Airport, KTI) → Siem Reap (Siem Reap–Angkor International Airport, SAI) — direct domestic flights (≈ 50–60 min) or an intercity bus along highway NR6 (≈ 6 h). On arrival — transfer (≈ 45–60 min) to central Siem Reap.

  • 🚶 In the evening — “tune your eye” by the Angkor Wat moat: powerful axes, still water, and palms in the warm light of sunset. Ideal for a slow walk and first panoramas without the crowds.

Day 4 — Angkor: “Small Circuit” — Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, Bayon

  • 🚶 Sunrise on the terraces of Angkor Wat: radial layout, galleries with bas-reliefs (Ramayana/Mahabharata, Processions), the profile of five towers as a symbol of the cosmic Mount Meru. Then — the South Gate of Angkor Thom and the Bayon: the “stone faces” of Lokeshvara, a complex multi-level plan, and dramatic light and shadow in narrow passages. Finish at the Terrace of the Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper King — the city reads as a single ritual landscape.

Day 5 — Angkor: “Grand Circuit” — Ta Prohm, Ta Keo, Pre Rup

  • 🚶 Morning at Ta Prohm is a dialogue between stone and jungle: silk-cotton and plane-tree roots, masonry seams where nature “underlines” the architecture. Then the austere Ta Keo (unfinished, yet an outstanding textbook of proportions) and Pre Rup with its brick пластика and views over rice fields. The day is all about “texture”: pink sandstone, late laterite masonry, brick, and traces of restorations.

Day 6 — Banteay Srei + “museums in the fields”: Kbal Spean and the Landmine Museum

  • 🚶 Banteay Srei is 10th-century carving “lace”: miniature proportions, perforations, and pink sandstone ornament read best in the morning. On the way there/back — Kbal Spean (the River of a Thousand Lingas) to understand the sacredness of water in the landscape. End at the Landmine Museum: the human context of the region and today’s work to preserve heritage.

Day 7 — Siem Reap: museums and “putting Angkor’s mosaic together”

  • 🚶 Angkor National Museum is a concentrated guide to iconography, stylistic schools, and the “keys” to bas-reliefs. After that — Preah Norodom Sihanouk-Angkor Museum (with APSARA/Sophia Univ.): archaeological finds from Banteay Kdei, burial complexes, and the “West Baray.” Evening — rest by the river, and prep for the trip north.

Day 8 — Transfer to Sra’em (base for Preah Vihear) + evening reconnaissance

  • 🚗 Transfer: Siem Reap → Sra’em (≈ 3–4 h via NR64/NR62; a private transfer is the most convenient). On arrival — relax by the hotel pool/gardens: ahead is a mountain temple on the Dangrek ridge.

  • 🚶 A short walk around the поселок (Saem market, local cafes) and a briefing at reception: how to get in the morning to the mountain’s foot, where the ticket booths are, and where to board the jeeps.

Day 9 — Temple of Preah Vihear: a sanctuary on the edge of the plateau

  • 🚙 Early departure to the foothill (≈ 30 km from Sra’em). Here — buy tickets and transfer to local motorbikes/pickups for the final climb up the steep road. At the top — a cascade of gopuras, processional axes, terraces, and dizzying views over the rocky Dangrek escarpment. Architecture as a “route-ritual”: each courtyard and threshold is a step toward the inner sanctuary.

Day 10 — Koh Ker (Lingapura) → Kampong Thom

  • 🚗 In the morning transfer to the Koh Ker complex (≈ 2–2.5 h). The pyramid Prasat Thom, giant platforms, sanctuaries, and remnants of the planning network of the 10th-century capital are a rare chance to see a different “model” of a Khmer city. After lunch — transfer to Kampong Thom (≈ 2–3 h) and rest before Sambor Prei Kuk.

Day 11 — Sambor Prei Kuk: forerunners of Angkor

  • 🚶 A full day in the Sambor Prei Kuk archaeological park (Ishanapura): 7th-century brick prasats with unique reliefs and polygonal plans. Walk the three groups (Preah Khan, Sambor, Yeai Poan) as a single “city-forest”: silence, mosses, and carvings in the light — a rare experience of pre-Angkor architecture.

Day 12 — Return to Siem Reap and a final evening

  • 🚗 Transfer: Kampong Thom → Siem Reap (≈ 2.5–3 h). In the evening — a farewell walk around the Old Market and the riverside. Compare the itinerary lines in your head: pre-Angkor prasats → Angkor as the imperial peak → the mountain temple of Preah Vihear and the Koh Ker capital — the Khmers had many “cities,” and you’ve seen their logic.
