🥾 DAY-BY-DAY ROUTE

Day 1 — Dobbiaco → Rifugio Auronzo: the classic loop around Tre Cime

  • 🥾 The main walk of the day is the famous circular trail around Tre Cime di Lavaredo through a landscape of alpine meadows, scree slopes, viewpoints, and powerful rock towers. The route usually starts from Rifugio Auronzo, which is easy to reach on the seasonal 444 bus from Dobbiaco/Toblach. The classic loop via Rifugio Lavaredo, Forcella Lavaredo saddle, and the Rifugio Locatelli area takes about 3.5–5 hours of actual walking without long stops for photos and lunch; the distance is roughly about 9.5–10 km, with elevation gain usually around ≈ 350–450 m. The difficulty for this day is moderate: the trail is very famous, well marked, and popular, with no climbing sections, glaciers, or via ferrata, so it suits an ordinary traveler with good trekking shoes. Along the way, you get panoramas of the north faces of Tre Cime, the stone amphitheaters of the Sexten Dolomites, pastel meadows, and classic mountain huts. An overnight stay at Rifugio Auronzo makes sense so you do not have to rush down and can enjoy the soft evening light at the viewpoints. In the July–September season, it is important to start early: there are many people here during the day, and thunderstorms are common after midday. Access to Auronzo in high season often requires advance online booking for the bus or parking; also, after a snowy spring, some sections may open later, so in the morning it is useful to check trail conditions at the visitor center or with the hut staff.

Day 2 — Rifugio Auronzo → Rifugio Locatelli: panoramic crossing through the Sexten Dolomites

  • 🥾 The second day is no longer just a sightseeing walk, but a real crossing through the Dolomiti di Sesto mountain natural area with an overnight stay in one of the region’s most famous huts. The most realistic and safe option for an ordinary traveler is to go from Rifugio Auronzo along the familiar panoramic section through Forcella Lavaredo to Rifugio Locatelli / Dreizinnenhütte, then add an unhurried walk along the nearby viewpoint trails and return to the hut itself for the night. The active part of the day usually takes 4–6 hours depending on your pace and walks to viewpoints; the Auronzo → Locatelli section itself is relatively short, but with photo stops, a look into the valley, and a possible loop toward meadow areas, the day becomes a full one. For distance, you can plan 8–12 km, with total ascent/descent within ≈ 300–500 m. Difficulty is moderate, leaning toward moderate/high because of the altitude, rocky surface, and longer active day, but without technically dangerous sections. This route suits an ordinary traveler because it follows the best-known marked trails around Tre Cime, where no helmet, rope protection, or special mountain gear is required. The scenery here is especially dramatic: limestone towers, echoing scree amphitheaters, green meadow bowls, and panoramas over the Sexten massifs. In July and early August, the sun on exposed sections is very strong, so you need water, a hat, and UV protection. After rain, stones become slippery, and in September evenings are already cold, so it is worth bringing a warm layer for the hut and confirming your bed reservation in advance.

Day 3 — Rifugio Locatelli → Rifugio Auronzo → Dobbiaco: morning walk and descent to transport

  • 🥾 The third day is best kept lighter and very realistic: in the morning, take a short nature walk through the alpine valley and viewpoints near Rifugio Locatelli, then return calmly along the marked trail via Forcella Lavaredo to Rifugio Auronzo and ride the bus back down to Dobbiaco. This finale gives you one more full hiking day among rocks, meadows, and panoramas, but without rushing and without overloading yourself before the journey home. The active part usually takes 3–4.5 hours, the distance is about 5–7 km depending on the morning walk, and the elevation change is mostly moderate, with a climb back to the saddle and then a relatively easy return to Auronzo. Difficulty is moderate. The route suits an ordinary traveler because it is the same safe and very popular corridor around Tre Cime, where the main requirements are comfortable shoes, water, and a sensible time buffer before the last bus. In feeling, this is a day for a thoughtful farewell to the Sexten Dolomites: early in the morning there are fewer people, the light is softer, and the rocks look especially sculpted. Seasonal details matter: by the end of September the weather changes faster, fog can cover the saddles, and you must not miss the last bus down. If the forecast is unstable, it is better to set out right after breakfast so you return to the stop by Rifugio Auronzo well before the second half of the day.
