🥾 DAY-BY-DAY ROUTE

Day 1 — Tende: park entry and a warm-up walk to Lac des Mesches

  • 🥾 It’s best to make the first day an adaptation day: arrival by the Train des Merveilles to Tende, a short visit to the Maison du Parc, and then an easy walk toward Lac des Mesches or along the lower part of the valley to the start of the Valley of Wonders trails. Nature of the walk: alpine valley, conifer forest, mountain river, wide trail, and beautiful views of the Roya slopes. The active part of the day usually takes 2.5–4 hours depending on your turnaround point; this is an easy or moderate walk of about 6–10 km with roughly 150–300 m of elevation gain. This day suits an ordinary traveler without special gear: the route follows clear approaches, with no technical sections, no exposed ridges, and no need to go high. In August and September it can be hot during the day even in the mountains, so it’s better to head out after check-in, but not too late, so you don’t return at dusk. It’s also a good day to ask at the visitor center about trail conditions, local closures, and the rules for the archaeological engraving zone, where you must not leave the marked path.

Day 2 — Castérino: Valley of Wonders and Refuge des Merveilles

  • 🥾 The main day of the route is a hike from Castérino via Lac des Mesches to Refuge des Merveilles and the upper lakes of the Valley of Wonders. Nature of the walk: high-mountain valley, stone basins, lakes, panoramas of the southern Alps, and the famous archaeological landscape around Mont Bégo. For an ordinary traveler, this is one of the most beautiful yet still realistic routes in the region: on a marked trail, with no mountaineering elements, no glaciers, and no rope protection required. The active part of the day takes about 6–7.5 hours; roughly 12–15 km round trip with about 700–900 m of ascent. Difficulty is moderate, in places closer to high because of the altitude and length, but not because of technique. Important: in the engraving zone you must strictly stay on marked trails, not step on stone slabs beside the path, not touch the engravings, and not use poles with metal tips. In August and early September this day is especially good for weather and daylight length, but after rain the trail can be slippery, and after early autumn cold snaps the first snow is possible on the passes. If you want a gentler option, you can hike only as far as the refuge and the nearest lakes without extending the route.

Day 3 — Castérino: Fontanalba and Lac Vert

  • 🥾 It’s best to dedicate the second full hiking day to Val de Fontanalba and Lac Vert de Fontanalba. Nature of the walk: larch forests, mountain meadows, streams, high-mountain basins, and soft alpine scenery, calmer and greener than the harsh rocky aesthetic of the Valley of Wonders. This is an excellent contrast to the previous day. In the standard version, the walk takes 4.5–6 hours, the distance is usually about 9–12 km, and elevation gain is around 450–700 m. Difficulty is moderate. The route suits an ordinary traveler because it follows well-known and popular trails from the Castérino area, with no dangerous rocky sections and no special equipment needed. On the route you can walk at an easy pace, take breaks by the lakes, and not aim for high passes. Seasonal nuances: in August the sun is strong and there is not shade everywhere; in September mornings are already noticeably cooler, but the light is softer and there are fewer people. If it rained the day before, it’s better to check trail conditions in Tende or at the park house and avoid heading onto less obvious side paths.

Day 4 — Tende: easy walk and return through the Roya valley

  • 🥾 The final day is best kept lighter: return from Castérino to Tende, a short walk through the natural surroundings of the Roya valley or along one of the lower viewpoint sections by the river and forest, and then departure back. Nature of the walk: valley, forest, gentle viewpoints, and a recovery pace after two long hikes. The active part of the day is 2–3.5 hours, distance about 5–8 km, and elevation gain around 100–250 m. Difficulty is easy. Such a day is realistic for an ordinary traveler: there’s no rush, no long climb, and you can leave time for coffee in Tende, the museum about the Valley of Wonders, or a buffer for transport schedules. In late August and September it’s important to remember that buses and local shuttles in the mountain valleys run less frequently than on the coast, so it’s best to check the schedule the day before. If the weather worsens, this day can easily be shortened without losing the logic of the route.
