🧭 DAY-BY-DAY ROUTE

Day 1 — Mâcon: an introduction to Burgundy wines, the Saône riverfront, and a first tasting

  • 🚆 It is convenient to plan your arrival in Mâcon via the Mâcon-Ville or Mâcon-Loché TGV stations. From Mâcon-Loché TGV station to the center of Mâcon is about 6 km, so after the train it is best to take a taxi or a pre-booked transfer to your hotel right away. If you are arriving via Lyon, it makes sense to travel by train or taxi to Mâcon and make the city your base for all 3 days, so you do not have to move around with suitcases and lose time on logistics.

  • 🏨 After check-in, devote the first half of the day to Mâcon — a city often underestimated compared with more famous wine names, although it is exactly what sets the rhythm for all of southern Burgundy. The historic center by the Saône is pleasant for a slow walk: pastel facades, covered passageways, squares, cafés with terraces, and a very soft, almost southern atmosphere. This is an especially good place to begin a wine tour without rushing: a walk along the river, a light lunch, and a gradual immersion into the style of Mâconnais wines, where white Burgundies based on Chardonnay show more sunshine, more open fruit tones, and a more food-friendly softness than in the northern part of the region.

  • 🍷 The main stop of the day is the Cité des Climats et vins de Bourgogne in Mâcon. This is a modern wine center dedicated to the landscapes, history, soils, appellations, and wine culture of Burgundy. The architecture of the building itself refers to the world of winemaking, and the exhibition helps explain why even neighboring vineyard plots here can produce noticeably different wines. For this route, it is the perfect starting point: first you get context about climats, terroirs, and the appellations of southern Burgundy, and then move on to an introductory tasting. This is an especially convenient place to understand the differences between Mâcon, Saint-Véran, Pouilly-Fuissé, Pouilly-Vinzelles, and Pouilly-Loché.

  • 🧀 For lunch or an early dinner, focus on local gastronomy: goat cheeses, Bresse poultry, Burgundy-style snails, jambon persillé, terrines, river fish, and seasonal mushroom dishes. White wines of the Mâconnais pair especially well with cream sauces, poultry, trout, zander, cheeses from nearby farms, and regional cuisine that is not too heavy. If the tasting has already taken place, do not plan any self-driving later in the day: move around Mâcon on foot or use taxis.

  • 🌆 In the evening, take a calm walk along the Saône riverfront. The water, the Saint-Laurent Bridge, the soft light on the facades, and the feeling of a slow French provincial evening create the perfect mood for the wine-focused part of the trip. It is best to finish the first day early: the next day begins the outbound route through Fuissé, Solutré, and Pierreclos. Ideally, all winery visits for day 2 should be confirmed in advance, with separate checks of opening hours, tour language, the availability of English- or French-speaking guidance, and the tasting format. Tastings are restricted to guests aged 18+, and after them only taxis, transfers, or an organized driver are recommended.

Day 2 — Pouilly-Fuissé, Solutré, and Château de Pierreclos: great white wines and limestone landscapes

  • 🚖 In the morning, head from Mâcon to Fuissé by pre-booked taxi or private transfer. The drive takes about 20–25 minutes depending on your starting point in the city. This is an important day of the route, and it is fundamentally better planned without renting a car if tastings are part of the program. The alternative is a sober driver, but for a couple or a small group it is safer and more comfortable to book a full-day transfer with waiting time between stops.

  • 🍇 The first wine stop is Domaine Ferret in Fuissé, one of the most recognizable names in the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation. This place is especially interesting because it helps you feel the subtlety of Chardonnay on the limestone slopes of the Mâconnais: the wines here often show not only ripe fruit, but also precision, tension, a salty minerality, and a beautiful evolution in the glass. Visits are by prior appointment, so booking is essential. Allow 1.5–2 hours for the visit, including the presentation of the estate, the wine style, and the tasting itself. When booking, clarify in advance the language of the visit and the availability of specific tasting sets.

  • 🥾 After the tasting, the transfer to Solutré-Pouilly takes only a few minutes. Here the route changes pace: instead of a glass, you get air, panoramas, and one of the most recognizable landscapes of southern Burgundy. The Rock of Solutré rises above the vineyards like a powerful limestone landmark, and a walk at its foot helps you literally see the connection between wine and geology. The best format is a calm route with stops for views, without rushing and without overloading the day with too many stops. In the warm season it is especially beautiful here in the morning and toward evening, and in hot months water, a hat, and comfortable shoes are very useful.

  • 🏛️ Before or after the walk, you can stop by the Maison du Grand Site and, if you wish, the Musée de Préhistoire de Solutré. These places add a cultural layer to the route: you see not only the wine landscape, but also the broader history of the place — from ancient settlement to the modern understanding of a protected landscape. This is a good pause between tastings, allowing you not to overload the day with alcohol and making the tour more mature and balanced.

  • 🍷 In the second half of the day — Château de Pierreclos, a historic family wine estate and one of the most atmospheric wine addresses in the area. Here the impression is built not only on the wine, but also on the château itself: ancient walls, historic rooms, a medieval spirit, underground spaces, and the feeling that the tasting is taking place not in an abstract showroom, but inside living Burgundian history. The visit format usually combines a presentation about the château and the estate with a wine tasting in old cellars. Booking in advance is also required here. It is reasonable to allow about 2 hours for this stop.

  • 🍽️ It is best to finish the day with an early dinner in Mâcon or at one of the restaurants in the vineyard area, but again without driving yourself. Ideal dishes for white Burgundy include fish in beurre blanc, Bresse chicken, pâtés, warm goat cheese, local sausages, cream sauces, and seasonal vegetables. If you want to make the day even more comfortable, ask your transfer to meet you at the last winery and take you directly to the restaurant or back to the hotel. This is an important part of responsible wine travel: tastings and self-driving are incompatible.

Day 3 — Lugny and the wine routes of the Mâconnais: cooperative Burgundy, vineyards, and a calm finale

  • 🚖 Dedicate the third day to another side of the wine region — broader, more open, and very illustrative for understanding the modern Mâconnais. The morning transfer from Mâcon to Lugny by taxi or private transfer takes about 25–30 minutes. The road passes through soft hills, villages with cream-colored stone houses, and neat vineyards, so even the short transfer feels like part of the journey.

  • 🍾 The main stop of the day is Cave de Lugny, one of the key cooperative wine structures of southern Burgundy and an important place for understanding the scale of local winemaking. Unlike small domaines, here you can especially clearly see how the region works as a single wine ecosystem. The wine shop and tasting area let you try different styles of Mâconnais white wines, compare simpler and more expressive cuvées, and better understand why Chardonnay feels so naturally at home here on limestone-clay soils. The estate offers wine tourism activities and marked vineyard routes; their availability and format should be checked in advance on the official website.

  • 🌿 After the tasting, it is worth walking the vineyard route connected with Cave de Lugny, or choosing a short walk among the vineyards nearby. This is an excellent final touch for the tour: you are not just tasting wine, but seeing the relief, the slope exposure, and the scale of the terroir. In clear weather the landscapes here are especially photogenic — undulating lines of vines, occasional cypress-like silhouettes, stone villages, and the soft light of southern Burgundy create a very different visual image from the stricter northern part of the region.

  • 🧺 For lunch, simple and very local combinations work well: baguette, cheese, terrines, seasonal fruit, ham, salads with local poultry, or a menu in a small village restaurant. White wines from the Mâconnais are good here not only in a tasting format, but also at the table — it is with food that their gastronomic character, friendliness, and versatility are especially clear.

  • 🛍️ After lunch, you can return to Mâcon, make final purchases of wine and gourmet souvenirs, or stop by the Cité des Climats again if you want to reinforce what you learned after two days of field impressions. Plan the final day calmly: you need a margin of time between the tasting, the walk, and the trip to the station or airport. If you are departing via Mâcon-Loché TGV, allow extra time when leaving central Mâcon; if via Lyon, it is better to book a transfer or a taxi + train combination in advance.

  • ⚠️ One practically important rule for the whole route: all tastings are only for adult guests aged 18+, visit formats often change by season, and some tours are available by appointment only. Before the trip, be sure to recheck opening hours, closure dates, visit language, cancellation rules, and the need for booking on the official website of each venue. After tastings, do not get behind the wheel: use a taxi, private transfer, organized wine tour, or a designated sober driver.
