🧭 DAY-BY-DAY ITINERARY

Day 1 — Altstadt: Town Hall, Burgplatz and the Rhine promenade

  • 🚶 Start at the Town Hall Square (Marktplatz) and Burgplatz by the Schlossturm: stone, water, and history come together in a single frame here. Head down to the Rheinuferpromenade—a wide riverside promenade with a river breeze, street musicians, and endless views of the bridges. In Altstadt’s narrow lanes, drop into classic breweries (Altbier is from here) and browse the windows of artisan shops. Finish with sunset by the water: the Rhine is especially meditative at this hour.

Day 2 — Carlstadt and Kö: Carlsplatz Market, Königsallee and Hofgarten

  • 🚶 Morning at Carlsplatz: a food market with local cheeses, spices, and coffee. Then head to Kö (Königsallee): a boulevard with a canal, glass, and luxury façades—but the main thing here isn’t shopping, it’s the beautiful linear perspective. Cross a little bridge and you’ll smoothly transition into Hofgarten: the city’s oldest park, perfect for a “reset” on a bench by the water and for shifting into a calmer city pace.

Day 3 — K20 at Grabbeplatz and the Old Town museum cluster

  • 🖼️ A day for modern classics: K20 (Kunstsammlung NRW) brings together major 20th-century names—from Pollock and Klee to Beuys and Richter. After that, walk through nearby Carlstadt: Hetjens, a ceramics museum from antiquity to 20th-century design, and the Filmmuseum with an interactive “behind the scenes” exhibition. In the evening, stop by small galleries and vintage bookstores—this area is best for “small discoveries.”

Day 4 — Ehrenhof and Golzheim: Kunstpalast, NRW‑Forum and a green corridor to the Rhine

  • 🖼️ The Ehrenhof complex is a striking stage between museums and parkland. At the Kunstpalast you’ll find painting, prints, glass, and photo collections; across the way, NRW‑Forum focuses on photography, pop and digital culture. Between visits, take a short detour into Rheinpark-Golzheim: wide lawns and diagonal views toward the bridges. This day gives you both “museum depth” and “Rhine air.”

Day 5 — MedienHafen: architecture, Rheinturm and “photogenic geometry”

  • 🏙️ Walk on foot from Altstadt along the promenade to MedienHafen: former docks turned into an architectural kaleidoscope with Frank Gehry’s white and steel volumes (Neuer Zollhof). Go up the Rheinturm: from above you can see how the city “opens up” around the water. At sunset the Hafen is especially beautiful—glass catches pink light, and reflections in the canals make shots feel cinematic.

Day 6 — Little Tokyo and Pempelfort: from ramen to local design

  • 🍜 Around Immermannstraße you’ll find Japanese restaurants, bakeries and small shops—few tourist clichés, lots of “real life.” After a late breakfast, turn toward Pempelfort: small galleries, cafés, design shops, and a route without a rigid plan. In the evening you can return to Altstadt—already “on your own two feet,” understanding the rhythm of the center.

Day 7 — Nordpark and Aquazoo: big fountains, a Japanese garden, an underwater cosmos

  • 🌿 Nordpark greets you with an axial avenue featuring 170-meter-long water cascades and broad lawns. Inside you’ll find an intimate Japanese Garden and the Aquazoo Löbbecke Museum: a zoo, aquarium, and natural history museum under one roof. It’s an “easy” and spectacular day: water, plants, slow transitions, and warm light falling beautifully across the paths.

Day 8 — Oberkassel and the Rhine meadows: a picnic, skyline views, and long walks

  • 🍃 Cross the Oberkasseler Brücke to the left bank: the wide Rheinwiesen are perfect for a picnic and panoramas of the Old Town and the Rheinturm. Oberkassel offers early-20th-century villa streets, quiet squares, and cozy restaurants around Belsenplatz. Walk back at sunset—the city lights up beautifully along the waterline.

Day 9 — Kaiserswerth: imperial fortress ruins, cobbled lanes and the Rhine

  • 🏰 In the north of the city is Kaiserswerth: romantic Kaiserpfalz ruins right by the water and gingerbread-like houses around Klemensplatz. This place is about stone texture, slow coffee, and “postcard” visuals. It’s easy to reach on the U79, and on the way back you can dreamily follow the riverside promenade.

Day 10 — Benrath: a waterside palace and a park “like a pastoral”

  • 🎀 Schloss Benrath is a Baroque ensemble with perfect symmetry, mirror ponds, and avenues. Inside are museums (the residence, European garden culture, natural history); outside is a park where time seems to slow down. This is the best day to “slow the pace”: it’s beautiful to simply walk and breathe here.

Day 11 — HHU Botanical Garden and Südpark/Volksgarten

  • 🪴 In the south of the city is the university Botanical Garden with a dome greenhouse and plant collections from around the world. Nearby is Südpark/Volksgarten: lakes, wooden bridges, long willow shadows, and the perfect place for a lazy day. It pairs well with an unhurried late lunch.

Day 12 — Creative south: Bilk/Unterbilk and lines toward MedienHafen

  • 🎨 Bilk is a neighborhood of local bakeries, bars, and young culture. Walk in loops toward Unterbilk and then on to the Hafen—this makes the connection “everyday life → design city” easier to feel. A bonus: street art and graffiti if you look closely at gates and building end walls.

Day 13 — Classic Remise and “mechanical beauty”

  • 🚗 Classic Remise is a former depot turned into a “temple” of classic cars: glass boxes, chrome, the smell of oil, and collectors’ conversations. Even if you’re not a vintage car fan, it’s an aesthetic experience—about proportions, details, and light on lacquered fenders.

Day 14 — Finale: your favorite Rhine viewpoint, dinner, and one last loop through the center

  • 🌇 Return to your “anchor point”: the Rheinuferpromenade, the view from Oberkasseler Brücke, or the Rheinturm observation deck. Take one last loop through Altstadt and Kö, choose a restaurant “with atmosphere,” and close the trip softly and beautifully—without rushing or checklists.
