🧭 DAY-BY-DAY ITINERARY

Day 1 — City Center: the station, Deutsches Fußballmuseum and the Westenhellweg “axis”

  • 🚶 Start right at Dortmund Hbf: on the north side of the square stands the Deutsches Fußballmuseum — a modern space about the history of German football, trophies, stadium emotions and fan culture. After the museum, head out to the shopping street Westenhellweg: dense urban fabric, street musicians, arcades. Drop by Alter Markt and the Reinoldikirche — this is how the “framework” of the old center comes together. In the evening — a calm walk to the Wallring with green boulevards: remnants of the old fortification ramparts have become a comfortable pedestrian loop for a first introduction to the city.

Day 2 — Dortmunder U and Museum Ostwall: art, media and a roof with views

  • 🚶 A symbol of the Ruhr’s transformation is the Dortmunder U tower: a former brewery has gained new content — contemporary art exhibitions, media installations and the Museum Ostwall. Go up to the viewing terrace to see the railway line, the compact city center and industrial silhouettes on the horizon. After that — the Unionviertel: a creative district with galleries, graffiti and a great coffee scene. A day about the “new Dortmund” — from industry to culture.

Day 3 — Hörde: the PHOENIX-See promenades

  • 🚶 Head to Hörde — a district where, on the site of a steelmaking giant, the urban resort PHOENIX-See appeared. The loop trail around the lake (≈3.2 km) is ideal for a long walk: glass façades, light footbridges, motorboats on the water, terraces for breakfast-lunch-dinner. In the western part there’s the Kulturinsel islet with modern sculptures and views of the landmark Hochofen Phoenix-West. By day — an unhurried “Scandi” rhythm; in the evening — sunset and the restaurant lights on Am Kai.

Day 4 — Phoenix des Lumières and the industrial landscape of Phoenix-West

  • 🚶 Just a few minutes from the lake is Phoenix des Lumières: the huge historic “Phoenixhalle” has become a media-art center with immersive exhibitions (Monet, Dalí, etc.). The contrast afterward is the brutal beauty of Phoenix-West: the relief of iron trusses, the gasometer, tracks and paths. Do a loop through the techno park, catching angles of the blast furnaces and new offices — Ruhr industrial romanticism reads especially vividly here.

Day 5 — Westfalenpark and Florianturm: “lots of air” in the city center

  • 🚶 Westfalenpark is 70+ hectares of gardens, lawns and paths right in the urban fabric. Come in the morning: quiet, mirror-like water at the Buschmühlenteich and bright flowerbeds. Go up the Florianturm TV tower for a circular panorama — from the BVB stadium to the green hills in the south. In season the park lives with festivals and fairs, but even an ordinary day is pure pleasure for unhurried rest.

Day 6 — Rombergpark and Dortmund Zoo

  • 🚶 Botanischer Garten Rombergpark is a “forest in the city”: tree collections, greenhouses, long avenues; it’s easy to spend half a day here without fuss. Nearby is Zoo Dortmund, known for breeding programs for South American animals. This is a day to “switch” scale: from architecture to greenery and living spaces.

Day 7 — Signal Iduna Park and the city’s football geography

  • 🚶 In the morning, head to Signal Iduna Park — the home arena of Borussia Dortmund: tours show the stands, mixed zones and the “Yellow Wall” Südtribüne. Next — a fan route to Borsigplatz (the historic birthplace of the club) and to the official fan shop. Football here is more than sport: it’s local identity and the city’s energy.

Day 8 — LWL-Industriemuseum Zeche Zollern: Art Nouveau and machines

  • 🚶 In the west of the city, in Bövinghausen, there’s a museum on the grounds of the Zollern coal mine. The main “wow” moment is the engine hall with its Art Nouveau portal; nearby are workshop buildings and galleries, assembling a full story of Ruhr industry and its people. The route pairs well with a walk on the spoil heaps and a small snack in the museum café.

Day 9 — Hohensyburg and the Ruhr Valley

  • 🚶 The southern outskirts — Hohensyburg: the ruins of a medieval fortress on a rocky spur above the confluence of the Ruhr and Lenne; nearby are the Kaiser Wilhelm monument and the Vincke Tower. Viewpoints open onto Hengsteysee and wooded slopes. Bring water/a snack and comfortable shoes: the terrain is hilly, but the walk rewards you with views and a quietness rare for a metropolis.

Day 10 — DASA Arbeitswelt Ausstellung: how the world of work is built

  • 🚶 DASA is an unusual museum experience about safety, technology and professions: from “invisible hazards” to the future of workplaces. Interactive zones, real machines and scenarios — a great day for those who like to “touch and take apart” complex systems.

Day 11 — Beer history: Brauerei-Museum and local pubs

  • 🚶 Brauerei-Museum Dortmund explains how the city’s famous lager tradition formed: brewing, storage, delivery. After that — a short route through pubs and craft bars (there are many in the center) to try local styles; it’s sensible to plan this as an “afternoon + evening” without travel.

Day 12 — The Water Ring: walks along the Emscher/Springpad and “small” parks

  • 🚶 Choose a calm loop: short stretches along the canals, the green pockets of Stadtgarten and Friedensplatz, courtyards and small inner squares. A day of “small discoveries”: bookshops, coffee spots, vinyl stores—unhurried and mood-led.

Day 13 — Shopping and neighborhoods: Kreuzviertel and Brückstraßenviertel

  • 🚶 Kreuzviertel—cozy streets, historic buildings and dining; Brückstraßenviertel—more dynamic, youthful energy with street fashion and fast neo-cuisines. This is about “your Dortmund”: not a checklist of sights, but everyday life.

Day 14 — A finale by the water and the stadium lights

  • 🚶 Go back to where it felt especially good: PHOENIX Lake promenades at sunset, a view of Westfalenpark from the tower, or an evening loop through the center. As a farewell, the city often “winks” with stadium lights and reflections on the water—the right ending to a two-week story.
