Day 1 — Transfer to Žabljak and first introduction to Durmitor
🚆 The main logic of the route is to fly into Podgorica or Tivat and transfer to Žabljak, which serves as the best base for an affordable mountain holiday in Durmitor. From Podgorica, the drive takes about 2 hours 15 minutes without long stops, while the bus journey usually takes around 2 hours 40 minutes and may require checking the current departure the day before. If you arrive in Tivat, the trip is noticeably longer: about 3 hours 30 minutes by car through the inland parts of the country, so for a compact five-day itinerary Podgorica is more convenient.
🏔️ Žabljak is the highest-altitude town in Montenegro, set on a plateau among conifer forests, meadows, and huge limestone massifs of Durmitor. Even a short walk through the center sets the tone for the whole trip: the air here is drier and cooler than on the coast, the smell of pines mixes with the scent of herbs, and behind the houses and guest yards you constantly see the jagged gray-white walls of the mountains. In summer, during the season from June to September, the town is especially good for a relaxed break without resort bustle: in the morning it is easy to head out onto the trails, during the day to take long walks, and in the evening to return to the guesthouse for a quiet overnight stay.
🚶 After check-in, dedicate the rest of the day to light acclimatization: walk around the center of Žabljak, buy water and snacks for the next day, have an early dinner, and do not plan strenuous activity. If you still have energy, you can take a short evening walk toward the pine outskirts of town or the meadows near the entrance to the national park to get a feel for the terrain and altitude. In the mountains, twilight comes softly, but the roads empty quickly, so it is better to finish your walk before dark.
💤 Staying overnight in a guesthouse in Žabljak is especially convenient for a budget itinerary: there is no need to change base every day, and all key points—Black Lake, the viewpoints of Durmitor, and trips to the Tara Canyon—are accessible by short transfers as well as on foot or via combined routes.
