🧭 DAY-BY-DAY ITINERARY

Day 1 — Prague → Český Krumlov: arrival and first introduction to the city

  • 🚆 Transfer: Prague → Český Krumlov by direct FlixBus or RegioJet bus — usually about 2 h 35 min to 3 h 15 min, depending on the service and departure point. For a short and budget-friendly route, this is the most convenient option: no transfers are needed, your luggage travels with you, and arrival is usually near the center or the bus station, from where it is easy to walk to the hotel.

  • 🚶 Český Krumlov is one of those European towns where the best thing to do is simply slow down and let the place create the impression. The historic center, embraced by a bend of the Vltava, looks like a set from an old chronicle: narrow cobbled streets, signs on wrought-iron brackets, low colorful facades, passage arches, and unexpected viewpoints over the river. After check-in, do not overload the day with museums: it is wiser to spend a few hours on a relaxed walk around náměstí Svornosti, head toward Latrán, and see how the town changes by evening, when tour groups thin out and the stone walls and tiled roofs begin to glow in warm shades. This is the ideal format for the first day after the road: minimal logistics, maximum atmosphere.

  • 🚶 Be sure to go out to the bridges and embankments of the Vltava to see the famous panorama of Krumlov with the castle tower and the cascade of red roofs. The town is especially pleasant to explore without a strict plan: linger by a craft shop here, turn into a quiet lane there, and then return to the main square for dinner. For a budget trip, this is an excellent town: the main visual impressions come from the setting itself, not only from paid sights. In the evening, it is worth going to bed early so that the next day can be calmly devoted to the castle complex and museums without rushing.

Day 2 — Český Krumlov: castle, old town, and museums

  • 🚶 The main point of the day is the Český Krumlov State Castle and Chateau, one of the most important historic complexes in Central Europe. It impresses not only with its interiors, but also with its scale: it is not a single “postcard castle,” but a whole ensemble of courtyards, passages, terraces, viewpoints, and museum spaces where different eras can be read — from the medieval core to Renaissance and Baroque layers. Even the walk through the courtyards and up to the tower creates the feeling of a grand aristocratic theater under the open sky. Even if you do not take the long guided circuits, it is worth setting aside a few hours for walking the grounds, the castle museum, and the panoramic points, because it is here that you best understand why Krumlov makes such a strong impression.

  • 🚶 After the castle, it makes sense to go back down into the fabric of the old town and continue the day with more intimate spaces. The Regional Museum in Český Krumlov helps you see the town not only as a beautiful postcard, but as a real South Bohemian center with its own history, crafts, and connections to the surrounding region. It is especially interesting to look at how the place developed over time: then a walk through the streets begins to feel deeper, rather than just like a set of photogenic facades.

  • 🚶 If you want an unusual museum stop without overexertion, it is worth adding Museum Fotoatelier Seidel. This is a rare place where the history of the town is revealed through photography, family chronicle, and the visual memory of the region. The atmosphere here is completely different from large palace spaces: instead of grandeur, a human scale; instead of coats of arms and towers, faces, streets, everyday life, and the slow passage of time. This contrast makes the second day especially cohesive. If you wish, finish it in the monastery quarter of Kláštery Český Krumlov — a quieter and more contemplative part of the historic core where it is pleasant simply to stroll without racing from sight to sight.

Day 3 — Český Krumlov → České Budějovice: main square, Black Tower, and city rhythm

  • 🚆 Transfer: Český Krumlov → České Budějovice by bus — usually about 35–45 minutes. This is a short and very convenient leg, so there is no need to leave too early: have breakfast calmly, walk to the bus station, and by midday already be in your new base without the feeling of a lost day.

  • 🚶 České Budějovice offers a completely different experience of South Bohemia. If Krumlov charms with its fairy-tale quality and winding terrain, here you feel spaciousness, a confident urban scale, and a livelier everyday atmosphere. The heart of the city is náměstí Přemysla Otakara II., one of the largest historic squares in the country. In the center stands the Samson Fountain — a powerful Baroque focal point around which it is especially pleasant to observe the rhythm of the city: passersby, cafés, tram-and-bus life, and the gentle change of light on the facades. Here the trip becomes not only “about old-time charm,” but also about normal, comfortable urban life, which is especially pleasant on a short route.

  • 🚶 Climbing the Black Tower is the best panoramic point of the day. From above, it becomes especially clear how the city is laid out: the strict geometry of the center, domes and roofs, street lines, and green areas in the distance. Historically, the tower served both as a bell tower and a lookout point, and today it remains one of the most memorable symbols of Budějovice. After descending, it is worth leaving time for a calm walk through the surrounding streets of the historic center, around the cathedral area, and toward the embankments. Evenings here are usually calmer and cheaper than in overly touristy places, so it is a good base for the final night of the route.

Day 4 — České Budějovice: museum focus and return to Prague

  • 🚶 It is best to plan the last day without overload: leave time in the morning for the South Bohemian Museum or one more walk through the center, buy local sweets or beer-themed souvenirs, and say goodbye to the city at a comfortable pace. The South Bohemian Museum works especially well for the final day because it gives context to the whole region — from history and everyday life to a broader understanding of South Bohemia beyond postcard views. If you do not feel like visiting a museum, you can replace it with a relaxed loop around the square, a short coffee stop, and one more climb to the best viewpoints in the center.

  • 🚆 Transfer: České Budějovice → Prague. By bus, the journey usually takes about 2 h 20 min to 2 h 45 min; by train — roughly from 1 h 40 min to 2 hours depending on the service. If the goal is to save money and keep logistics simple, it is convenient to focus on a direct bus; if rail comfort matters more, you can choose the train. In any case, it is worth allowing extra time for the station and not planning a packed program before departure.

  • 🧳 This four-day route is good because it remains compact and realistic: two South Bohemian towns open up without exhausting transfers, and the trip itself turns out rich even on a moderate budget. There is castle architecture, monastic quiet, old squares, museum pauses, and bus logistics that do not “eat up” the rest. If the season is from April to October, it is especially pleasant that most walking spots and panoramas work in your favor with almost no extra cost: just walk, look, slow down, and leave time for pauses.
