Day 1 — Mostar: the Old Bridge and the Ottoman heart of the city
🚶 Start your trip in Mostar’s historic center — one of the most expressive cities in the Balkans, where eastern and Mediterranean atmospheres merge into a highly cinematic whole. The main scene of the day is Stari Most, the famous Old Bridge over the emerald Neretva, which has become a symbol not only of Mostar but of the whole country. The stone arch seems to hang above the river, and around it the entire old town unfolds: narrow lanes with time-polished stone, shops selling copperware, carpets, and handmade ceramics, old houses with wooden shutters, and café terraces hanging over the water. It is best to come here in the morning, before the bridge and viewpoints become too crowded: the light is softer, the photos are cleaner, and the walk itself feels slower and deeper.
🏛️ After the bridge, spend some time at the Old Bridge Museum in the Tara Tower complex and take a short walk through the old Kujundžiluk bazaar. This lets you do more than just look at a postcard image — it helps you understand how Mostar lived around this crossing for centuries. Then you can head to the Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque and climb to the viewpoint if you want to see the Old Bridge from above. For the entire historic center, allow 5–6 hours at a relaxed pace with stops for coffee, photos, and lunch. The route is easy in difficulty: it is mostly calm walking through a compact center, but keep in mind that the old paving can be slippery and uneven in places, especially after rain.
⚠️ An important safety condition for the whole trip: Bosnia and Herzegovina is suitable for travel in popular tourist cities and along main routes if you follow heightened safety precautions. Mines and unexploded ordnance may still remain in rural and mountain areas, so you must not leave official roads and marked trails or visit remote areas without an experienced local guide. For this 4-day route, choose only official tourist zones, paved roads, equipped entrances, and standard bus routes.
