🧭 DAY-BY-DAY ITINERARY

Day 1 — Arrival in Düsseldorf → Wuppertal: getting to know the Schwebebahn and dinner at a brewery

  • Arrive at DUS and take the train to Wuppertal Hbf (usually S11 to Düsseldorf Hbf + S8/RE to Wuppertal, 45–60 minutes with one transfer). Check in and take an easy walk to the suspended railway Schwebebahn: kids love the feeling of “flying” over the river. In the evening — a family dinner at Wuppertaler Brauhaus: spacious halls of a historic bathhouse, kids’ menu, non-alcoholic wheat beer, and a large cozy beer-garden courtyard. The atmosphere is friendly, noise isn’t an issue — the perfect first evening after the journey.

Day 2 — Der Grüne Zoo Wuppertal: a full day of play and the Okavango terraces

  • A zoo on the hills — green alleys, large enclosures, convenient loop routes. Set “anchors”: penguins and seals, elephants, orangutans, and the huge ARALANDIA aviary with macaws. In the center — the Okavango restaurant with a panoramic view of the elephants: terrace, high chairs, quick meals. The zoo map marks playgrounds and the “Wupper Dune” with sand — great breaks every 60–90 minutes. Return to the Schwebebahn at sunset — the city lights are mesmerizing.

Day 3 — Hardt and the Botanical Garden: Elisenturm tower, water cascades, and a garden café

  • Hardt Park is the city’s green “cap” above the Wupper. In the Botanical Garden, kids run from the palm greenhouse to the Elisenturm (viewing tower) and to the mini waterfalls by the playground. There’s also Café Elise with a beer-garden terrace: lemonades, pies, local seasonal dishes, and around it — perfect picnic lawns. The day formula: 70–90 minutes in the garden → snack → another loop along the paths and lawns.

Day 4 — Schwebodrom (VR adventure) + Utopiastadt and the Nordbahntrasse

  • In the morning — interactive fun at Schwebodrom: a VR flight through historic Wuppertal and exhibitions about the suspended railway are understandable even for preschoolers (family tickets available). In the afternoon — Utopiastadt at Mirker Bahnhof right on the Nordbahntrasse bike route: free play, scooters/bikes, street art objects, Café Hutmacher with a large outdoor area. If the weather is hot, look for the shady tunnels on the route: cool and safe.

Day 5 — Waldfrieden Sculpture Park + an evening in a beer garden along the trail

  • Waldfrieden is a “museum in the forest”: paths along the slopes, large sculptures, viewpoints. Go at a kid-friendly pace: short loops of 40–60 minutes, then juice/ice cream. In the evening — a beer garden by the old stations on the Nordbahntrasse: Trassengarten (Ottenbruch) or Biergarten Bahnhof Varresbeck. There’s often live music, long tables, kids on the move.

Day 6 — Düsseldorf: Aquazoo + Rheinpark Golzheim

  • Train ride 20–35 minutes. Aquazoo Löbbecke Museum is an “indoor zoo”: aquariums, little crocodiles, interactive exhibits, themed rooms — 2–3 hours easily. Afterward — Rheinpark Golzheim on the Rhine: long lawns, paths for balance bikes and kites. An easy family picnic and an unhurried return to Wuppertal.

Day 7 — Düsseldorf: Südpark (a lively “village-like” corner of the city) + a relaxed beer garden

  • Südpark is a huge green area with gardens, a lake, children’s lawns, and the cozy Café Südpark. A day without museums: feed ducks, play on the grass, a mini-quest “find the fattest chestnut.” On the way back — one of the city’s family-friendly beer gardens (for example, by the Rhine) — simple food, open space, adults rest, kids move around.

Day 8 — Oberhausen: SEA LIFE + LEGOLAND Discovery Centre

  • By train 60–75 minutes with a transfer. Morning — SEA LIFE Oberhausen: the aquarium tunnel, stingray “flying” area, the sharks’ “home,” and a glass viewing wall. Afternoon — LEGOLAND Discovery Centre Oberhausen: mini rides, a 4D cinema, toddler zones, LEGO workshops. Combo tickets are good value, but plan 4–6 hours for both and frequent “water” breaks.

Day 9 — Wuppertal at an easy pace: big zoo playgrounds + jam on the grass

  • Sleep in, playgrounds at the Green Zoo or on the Hardt, stroller nap, something sweet at Café Elise. In the evening — a family dinner in the courtyard of Wuppertaler Brauhaus or on the warm terrace at Hardt-Terrassen: kids move freely, parents share impressions — a mid-route reset.

Day 10 — Solingen: Seilbahn Burg cable car → Schloss Burg → Brückenpark

  • Take the S7 train to Solingen + bus 683 to the cable-car station: gondolas rise over the Wupper valley to the medieval Schloss Burg — towers, courtyards, pretzels. Afterward — down to Müngstener Brückenpark under Germany’s highest railway arch bridge: riverside paths, lawns, a rope-ferry platform (seasonal). Return to Wuppertal for dinner.

Day 11 — Cologne: zoo + evening at Aachener Weiher

  • 30–45 minutes by train. Cologne Zoo is large but very family-friendly: logical loops, elephant house, petting areas. In the evening — the Grüngürtel park by Aachener Weiher: long lawns, balance bikes, summer games. Nearby is a popular family beer garden with a simple menu and plenty of outdoor seating.

Day 12 — Cologne: Rheinpark and a “slow day”

  • Rheinpark has flat paths with cathedral views, playgrounds, a little sightseeing train in season, and lots of picnic spots. It’s a day “without lines”: lots of air and water, minimal museums. By evening, kids sleep great on the train back.

Day 13 — Junior Uni/urban creativity + a “farewell” beer garden on the trail

  • Keep an eye on Junior Uni’s schedule: there are often open workshops for kids. An alternative is a family art hour at the Von der Heydt Museum (a children’s format sometimes appears in the listings). In the evening — your favorite beer garden of the trip on the Nordbahntrasse: share your “TOP-3” tour impressions and pack your suitcases.

Day 14 — Morning loop on the Schwebebahn → flight

  • One last “loop” on the suspended railway — kids say goodbye to the “flying” train. Train transfer to DUS airport (usually S8/RE to Düsseldorf Hbf + S11 to the airport). If time allows — coffee with a view of the tracks at the main station.
