🚲 ROUTE BY DAY

Day 1 — Hasselt → Herkenrode → De Wijers → Hasselt

  • 🚲 Start and finish in Hasselt. About 32–38 km, pure riding time around 2.5–3.5 hours, with only a small elevation gain — roughly up to 80–120 m for the day. This is a very gentle warm-up day through flat Limburg: the route is based on the regional cycle node network, separate bike paths, asphalt, and short firm gravel sections in the nature area. It makes sense to leave from central Hasselt toward Herkenrode Abbey, then head on toward the ponds and wet landscapes of De Wijers — the “land of 1001 ponds.” Main stops along the way: Herkenrode Abbey, viewpoints and peaceful waterside sections in De Wijers, as well as terraces and cafés once you return to Hasselt. It is easiest to stock up on water and snacks in the city before departure, then again near Herkenrode and in settlements along the edge of the nature area; on longer nature loops you should not expect services every few kilometers. The surface is safe and friendly for an average tourist, especially on a city bike or e-bike. It is best to spend a second consecutive night in Hasselt so you can do the tour without rush and without extra packing. Road nuances: after rain, dirt edges by the ponds may be damp, and in windy weather the open waterside stretches feel longer than they look on the map. The day is realistic because it is short, almost flat, with frequent rest points and no complicated transport junctions.

Day 2 — Hasselt → Albert Canal → Bokrijk → “Cycling Through Water” → Genk

  • 🚲 Transfer between bases: start in Hasselt, finish in Genk. About 23–28 km, pure riding time around 1.5–2.5 hours, with minimal elevation gain — roughly 40–90 m. This is the signature day of the route: along flat, peaceful cycle paths by the Albert Canal and through the pond landscapes of De Wijers, you arrive at Bokrijk and the famous “Cycling Through Water” path near node 91. The path itself runs for more than 200 meters straight through a pond, with the water at eye level — one of the most memorable cycling scenes in Flanders. After a photo stop, it is worth taking a short walk in the park area of Bokrijk or detouring to the Arboretum if you want a green break without adding too much distance. It is convenient to take water and food from Hasselt before starting, then restock near Bokrijk, where there is tourist infrastructure, park navigation, and seasonal food points. It is best to stay overnight in Genk: this is convenient for the next day and gives you a chance to calmly see C-mine or the city center in the evening. Road nuances: at the most popular cycling spot there can be many people on good weekends, so it is better to ride “Cycling Through Water” in the first half of the day or outside peak hours, reducing speed and respecting pedestrians. The day is very realistic: short distance, excellent navigation, almost no hard climbs, and the route is built around the region’s official cycle network.

Day 3 — Genk → C-mine → city parks and ponds → Bokrijk/Molenvijver → Genk

  • 🚲 Loop day from Genk. About 26–34 km, pure riding time around 2–3 hours, with elevation gain usually up to 100–150 m. In feel, this is not a sporty stage but an urban and landscape cycling day with a cultural stop. Start from the center of Genk toward C-mine — a former mining complex transformed into a notable culture and design cluster. After exploring the site, you can make a comfortable loop through the city’s green zones, via Molenvijver and quiet neighborhoods, and if you wish head again toward Bokrijk or simply keep to a shorter urban arc. Main stops: C-mine, Molenvijver Park, and one of the water or forest sections on the edge of Genk. For food and coffee, Genk is very convenient: the easiest option is to make your main break near C-mine or back in the center, where there is more choice and it is easier to leave the bike for a short time. Carry at least one full bottle of water: although this is a city day, services are not always close by in the park connections. Overnight stay is again in Genk, so you do not have to move every evening and can save energy for the final riding day. Road nuances: in central Genk there are more traffic lights and local traffic than in the natural areas, but the cycling infrastructure is good; on shared paths with pedestrians, ride calmly. The day is realistic because it is easy to shorten or extend without losing its meaning: it is a convenient backup day in case of wind, rain, or a late start.

Day 4 — Genk → Bokrijk → De Wijers → Hasselt

  • 🚲 Final transfer between bases: start in Genk, finish in Hasselt. About 27–35 km, pure riding time around 2–3 hours, with a small elevation gain — roughly 50–100 m. The logic of the day is to return to Hasselt by a different calm arc through green sections and once again use the region’s strengths: the cycle node network, flat profile, and safe paths. If on day two you rode “Cycling Through Water” quickly and in a crowd, today you can make a more relaxed stop in Bokrijk, ride through the Arboretum or park edges, and then head toward Hasselt through De Wijers and green suburban links. Main stops: Bokrijk, the pond sections of De Wijers, and a final historic/gastronomic stretch in Hasselt. It is convenient to take water and snacks in Genk, then make a second break near Bokrijk or closer to Hasselt. If you are riding an e-bike, this is a good day for recharging in a café during a long lunch, although on this distance a full charge is usually more than enough. Road nuances: in rainy weather, wet leaves and slippery edges are possible in the forest and pond connections, so it is better not to chase speed. This day is realistic for an average cycle tourist because it again stays within a comfortable distance range, is almost flat, and logically ends the tour where it is easiest to continue onward by train through Belgium.
