🧭 DAY-BY-DAY ROUTE

Day 1 — Ashgabat: getting to know the city and the State Museum

  • 🚶 Arrival in Ashgabat (ASB). Check-in and an easy walk: Archabil and Bitarap Turkmenistan avenues, panoramas of the white-marble capital at the foot of the Kopetdag. The State Museum of the State Cultural Center is a convenient “entry point” into archaeology: from the Neolithic to the Middle Ages; halls on Nisa and Merv help tune your eye to ancient cities.

Day 2 — Nisa (Parthian fortresses) + carpet as a culture code

  • 🚶 In the morning — the Parthian fortresses of Nisa (UNESCO): earthen ramparts, palace platforms, sacred halls — a classic of Parthian fortification and court architecture. Read the layout: regular courtyards and dominant masses are especially clear in the morning light.

  • 🚶 In the afternoon — the National Museum of Turkmen Carpet: how ornament and weaving technique “translate” nomadic culture into an architectural language of forms and rhythms. The “carpet” facade is symbolic in itself.

Day 3 — Baharden Cave Kow-Ata + Gokdepe (Saparmurat Hajji Mosque)

  • 🚗 Drive Ashgabat → Baharden (≈ 100 km via M37, 1h 30m). Descend 60–65 m underground to the subterranean lake Kow-Ata: dim light, warm sulfur water, and stalactite “portals” create a rare “underworld” atmosphere — a counterpoint to the city ensembles.

  • 🚗 Closer to evening — Gokdepe: the Saparmurat Hajji Mosque with white domes and the rhythm of minarets against the steppe horizon. Outside — monumental plasticity; inside — light and ornament.

Day 4 — Anau (ruins of the Seyit Jemal ad-Din Mosque) + modern symbols

  • 🚗 A short trip to Anau (≈ 20–30 min): 15th-century ruins with the legendary “dragons” on the portal — an important layer of the region’s Islamic architecture. Return to the city: optionally — the Ruhy Mosque in Gokdepe/Kipchak (a majestic memorial complex) and evening views of Ashgabat.

Day 5 — Flight to Mary + Merv (a city in an oasis)

  • ✈️ Flight Ashgabat → Mary (≈ 40–50 min). Transfer to Bayramaly and the State Historical and Cultural Park “Ancient Merv”.

  • 🚶 Merv is a rare archaeological landscape in terms of scale: the city sites of Erk-kala, Gyaur-kala, Sultan-kala, the mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar — like a textbook of urban form from antiquity to the Seljuk sultanate.

Day 6 — Gonur-depe (Bactria–Margiana civilization)

  • 🚙 Expedition day: 4×4 along Karakum tracks (one way 2.5–3.5 hours). A palace-temple complex of the Bronze Age — an early “city-state” with a regular plan, bastions, and cult spaces. Return to Mary by evening.

Day 7 — Mary: museum + a second look at Merv

  • 🚶 The Mary local history/regional museum: showcases of finds from the Murgab oasis, ceramics, carved elements, epigraphy. Afterwards — a calm “second chapter” in Merv: details of defensive lines, iwans, iwan-domes and viewpoints near Sanjar in soft light.

Day 8 — Return to Ashgabat + Museum of Fine Arts

  • ✈️ Flight Mary → Ashgabat (≈ 40–50 min), transfer to the hotel.

  • 🚶 Museum of Fine Arts: iconography, panoramas of antiquity, and archaeological finds in the exhibition provide yet another angle on form and ornament.

Day 9 — Flight to Dashoguz + Kunya-Urgench (UNESCO)

  • ✈️ Ashgabat → Dashoguz (≈ 50–60 min). Drive to Kunya-Urgench (≈ 95–110 km, 1h 30m–2h).

  • 🚶 The Kunya-Urgench complex: the Kutlug-Timur minaret, the mausoleums of Turabek-khanym and Il-Arslan, portal arches and traces of caravanserais — compelling evidence of the Islamic tradition of Khorezm and its influence far beyond the region.

Day 10 — Kunya-Urgench: details and light

  • 🚶 A day focused on “details”: portal proportions, dome brickwork, epigraphy, planning links between the mausoleums and the minaret. Sunset angles—to understand silhouettes against the desert.

Day 11 — Return to Ashgabat + Abiverd (weather/road permitting)

  • ✈️ Dashoguz → Ashgabat (≈ 50–60 min). Depending on road conditions—detour to Abiverd near Kaka: a Late Sasanian/early Islamic ancient settlement with a massive rampart and a block grid (adds context between Nisa and Merv).

Day 12 — Ashgabat: final day

  • 🚶 Morning in parks and on the avenues (Inspiration Park/squares), time for souvenirs (carpet/ceramics). Summing up the storyline: Bronze Age → Parthia → Seljuks → Islamic Khwarazmian school → modernity.
