GORNY ALTAI

Follow the Katun from Manzherok’s pine slopes and Chemal’s cliffside bridges to the glassy expanse of Lake Teletskoye at Artybash. Then climb the Chuya Highway through Aktash to the Kurai steppe and Kyzyl-Chin, where snow-capped peaks frame rust-red badlands and endless sky.

🧭 DAY-BY-DAY ITINERARY

Day 1 — Gorno-Altaysk: getting to know Altai + the Anokhin Museum

  • Arrival in Gorno-Altaysk — the compact capital of the Altai Republic, immersed in greenery at the confluence of mountain streams. After checking in, take a walk around the center with its wooden houses and clear tributaries of the Katun. The main cultural highlight of the day is the A. V. Anokhin National Museum: modern halls guide you through Altai’s nature and ancient history, the Pazyryk kurgans and the iconic Ukok Plateau, and also introduce the paintings of Grigory Choros-Gurkin. The exhibitions are arranged logically and with respect for local traditions — a wonderful immersion in context before a trip into the mountains.

Day 2 — Manzherok: the lake, cable car, and panoramas of Malaya Sinyukha

  • In the morning, drive to Lake Manzherok — a warm body of water amid pine forests. The shores are overgrown with sedge and yellow water-lilies; in summer the water warms up to 22 °C, but it’s beautiful off-season too: mirror-smooth surface, conifer scents, and silence. The cable car at the year-round Manzherok resort takes you to viewpoints on Malaya Sinyukha Mountain: from here the Katun winds like a ribbon toward the passes, and on clear days distant ridges seem to float in the blue. Down below are a well-kept lakeside promenade, walking trails, cafes; in the evening — sauna/thermal baths for gentle acclimatization.

Day 3 — Chemal Road: Patmos and the Che‑Chkish Gorge

  • Travel along the legendary Chemal Road, following the emerald Katun. A charming highlight is Patmos Island near Chemal with the wooden Church of St. John the Theologian: a suspension bridge arcs lightly above the rapids, and carved scenes appear in niches in the rock. Next is the Che‑Chkish tract (Valley of Spirits): a narrow limestone gorge with a stream, waterfalls, and a viewing ledge above the Katun. The landscape here is “cinematic”: a contrast of pale cliffs, turquoise water, and conifers. On the way, stop by the viewpoint at the confluence of the Chemal and the Katun and the hydroelectric facility — a rare industrial accent in Altai’s natural canvas.

Day 4 — Manzherok and Turquoise Katun: light activities and relaxation

  • A day at a relaxed pace. In the morning — a walk along the conifer paths by Lake Manzherok, SUP or kayaks during calm hours. After lunch — drive to the “Turquoise Katun” area: viewpoints on bridges, short trails along the water, cafes with local gastronomy (honey, pine nuts, herbal teas). In the evening — a warm pool/bath complex at your lodge or stargazing: in the mountains the stars feel closer and more generous.

Day 5 — Transfer to the Teletskoye area: the banks of the Biya and the north of Teletskoye

  • The road leaves the Katun valley for the Biya valley, then continues through conifer forests of the Turochak district. Along the way — scenic sections above the river, small villages with wooden houses and haylofts, old pond dams. By evening — Artybash, the northern tip of Lake Teletskoye (Altyn‑Köl), the “Siberian Baikal” with crystal-clear water and high shores.

  • 🚐 Transfer: Manzherok/Chemal → Artybash (Lake Teletskoye): ≈ 200–260 km, 4–5.5 h with stops (via Mayma and the road to Turochak/Choya).

Day 6 — Lake Teletskoye: boat to waterfalls and cedar slopes

  • Teletskoye is long, deep, and austere: granite walls, little bays with pebble beaches, and cedar forests clinging to the slopes. The best format is a 3-hour boat trip across the northern waters with stops at the Korbu and Kishte waterfalls, cliffs, and “Love Island.” In calm weather the water is like liquid glass with a steel tint, and in wind a sharp “rift-like” wave rolls across the lake. After returning, stroll along the Artybash waterfront and sit by the fire bowls — the air smells of resin and wet stone.

Day 7 — Along the Biya: the reserve visitor center and walks by the source

  • A calm day on the banks of the Biya. Stop by the visitor center of the Altai Biosphere Reserve (information about routes, Teletskoye nature, and rules for visiting protected areas). Then — walking trails along the shore, photo stops on suspension footbridges, camp coffee with views of the mouth. Optionally — a sauna with a cold plunge in the Biya.

Day 8 — The Chuysky Trakt: Seminsky and Chike‑Taman

  • One of Russia’s most beautiful mountain highways — R‑256 (the Chuysky Trakt). Today is a “passes” day. Seminsky Pass (≈ 1717 m) is a broad saddle with cedar winds, a small fair of dried herbs, and views of ridgelines; Chike‑Taman (≈ 1295 m) is a stone serpentine with a viewpoint over a valley where the old road lies in winding ribbons. The road gradually becomes drier and higher; steppe tones mix into the conifers — a sign of the nearby Chuya Basin. Overnight — in the Aktash/Chibit area.

  • 🚐 Transfer: Artybash → Aktash/Chibit (via Gorno‑Altaysk, Seminsky and Chike‑Taman): ≈ 500–560 km, 8–10 h with photo stops. This is a packed “road” day: it’s best to leave at dawn.

Day 9 — Geyser Lake and the scenic steppes of Kurai

  • Not far from Aktash is a small wonder: Geyser (Blue) Lake. At the bottom, thermal springs “breathe,” lifting blue clay and drawing living concentric patterns. The drive into the Kurai Steppe reveals another face of Altai — vast, windy, and high. From the viewpoints you can see the ice caps of the North Chuya Range, and at sunset the ridge flares pink. In the evening — a starry sky without light pollution: the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye.

Day 10 — “Altai Mars”: the Kyzyl‑Chin tract

  • Kyzyl‑Chin is nicknamed “Altai Mars”: the hills and sides of the ravines are painted in clay reds, ochers, and terracotta tones, with striped layer cuts in places. The landscape is especially expressive in low sun — soft shadows emphasize the “Martian” texture. The road runs across the Kosh-Agach Plateau with sparse shrubs and an endless sky. After returning, relax in hot tubs or a sauna: the dry air of this area noticeably contrasts with the conifer zone of the Katun.

Day 11 — Kalbak‑Tash petroglyphs and the confluence of the Chuya and the Katun

  • An excursion to the Kalbak‑Tash petroglyph complex — one of the main sacred places in the Onguday district. On flat polished slabs are thousands of images from different eras: hunting scenes, herds of deer, anthropomorphic figures with solar crowns. Here you feel the continuity of time especially sharply. Next — the viewpoint at the confluence of the Chuya and the Katun: the meeting of two differently colored rivers is another symbol of the Chuysky Trakt. Return to the lodge by sunset.

Day 12 — Uch‑Enmek Nature Park and the Karakol Valley

  • An easy day focused on nature and traditions. The territory of Uch‑Enmek Nature Park is a sequence of pastures, birch groves, and low ridges where ancient rituals are still honored. The Karakol Valley preserves kurgans and sanctuaries, and shepherds drive their herds along the same roads as centuries ago. This is Altai landscape “without filters”: simple forms, deep skies, and a sense of quiet.

Day 13 — Return to the Katun: a free evening by the water

  • The road back seems to gather all the trip’s motifs into one album: steppe → passes → conifer valleys. The finish at the Katun means familiar bridges, the roar of rapids, light in the windows of tourist lodges. Spend the evening on an unhurried meal with local cuisine (soups with taiga herbs, honey, maral venison dishes) and memorable purchases: herbal blends, pine-cone jam, pine-nut brittle.

  • 🚐 Transfer: Aktash/Kurai → Manzherok/Chemal or Gorno‑Altaysk: ≈ 430–520 km, 7–9 h with stops.

Day 14 — Reserve/departure: morning on the Katun and transfer

  • A buffer day in case of bad weather in the mountains and for departure. In the morning — a short walk along the promenade, strong coffee with a view of the water, a farewell photo by the suspension bridge. Transfer to the airport/rail hubs.

  • ✈️/🚌 Transfer: lodge on the Katun → Gorno‑Altaysk airport (≈ 30–60 min) or connections in Biysk/Barnaul/Novosibirsk (≈ 2.5–6.5 h depending on the direction).
