🧭 DAY-BY-DAY ROUTE

Day 1 — Medeu → Shymbulak: a cable car over the spruces and views of Talgar Pass

  • 🚖 Morning: departure from central Almaty to the high-mountain complex “Medeu” (≈25–40 min by taxi/carsharing; bus No. 12 takes longer but is scenic). Along the way, the city smoothly gives way to the dark-green spruce slopes of Ile-Alatau National Park, and the air becomes noticeably fresher.

  • 🎟️ Medeu (≈1691 m) is a legendary open-air ice arena surrounded by a mountain amphitheater. Climb the “Health Staircase” to the mudflow-control dam—down below it’s thousands of steps, and from the top there’s a cinematic panorama of the Malaya Almatinka gorge and the serpentine roads winding up toward the mountains.

  • 🚡 Next—on to Shymbulak: from the lower station at Medeu, take the gondola (a cableway about 4.5 km long). In 15–20 minutes the cabins glide gently over ancient Tian Shan spruces, sunlit meadows, and rocky scree—outside the window, like in a movie, moraines and snowy peaks flicker past.

  • 🏔️ Shymbulak (≈2260 m): an alpine “village” with viewpoints, cafés, and routes toward the Tuyuksu glaciers. If the weather and lift operations allow, continue up on Combi-2/chairlift toward Talgar Pass (~3200 m). This is a kingdom of stone, sky, and wind: a chain of four-thousand-meter peaks (Abai, Amangeldy, Nursultan) draws a jagged horizon, and beneath your feet the gigantic bowl of the valley drops away.

  • 🥘 Lunch at the resort: hot lagman, plov, cocoa with a view of the ridges—and you’re full of energy again. In the afternoon, a leisurely walk along the promenade by the streams, photo spots at wooden bridges and benches where you can simply “sit with the mountains.”

  • 🕯️ Evening: descend back by gondola, return to the city (≈35–50 min). We recommend an early night—tomorrow brings big water and high-mountain roads.

Day 2 — Big Almaty Lake (BAL) + “Ayusai” visitor center

  • 🚘 Morning: head to Big Almaty Lake (≈28–35 km from the center; 1–1.5 h along a winding mountain road). BAL is a turquoise bowl of glacial water at ~2510 m among slender Tian Shan spruces and rocky ridges. From the northern dam you can read the “ensemble of peaks”: Satpayev Peak (4317 m), Ozyorny (4110 m), Tourist (3954 m). The water color shifts from milky jade to deep turquoise depending on season and light—a rare stroke of luck for photographers.

  • 📸 Half-day plan: viewpoints by the dam, a short path along the shore from safe points (farther on—only on permitted national-park trails; swimming and going to the water’s edge are prohibited). Take regular acclimatization breaks: even in summer the sun at 2500+ m is intense, the air is dry, and walking tires you out faster.

  • 🧭 Important: the area is close to the border zone with Kyrgyzstan—bring your passport. Due to natural risks (mudflows, snow, maintenance), temporary restrictions on driving up are possible; in that case, a good alternative is a walk to BAL panoramas lower in the valley + “Ayusai.”

  • 🌲 “Ayusai” visitor center (lower part of the gorge): interactive exhibits about the trails of Ile-Alatau National Park and a short walk to Ayusai Waterfall (~700 m from the center along an оборудованная trail). Here it’s easy to feel the “breathing” of the spruce forest, hear the string of water, and shoot a series of intimate frames of moss, roots, and струй.

  • 🍽️ Lunch/picnic: a thermos of tea and samsa on benches by the trail or a café on the road—and back down to the city by sunset (≈1 h). In the evening, a light walk along Dostyk Avenue or the botanical garden to “shake out” your legs after a mountain day.

Day 3 — Turgen Gorge: Bear Waterfall → Kairak Waterfall (a full trekking day)

  • 🚐 Early start (08:00): transfer from Almaty to Turgen (≈70–100 km, 1.5–2 h). The road winds through the foothills to a gorge with the noisy Turgen and Kishi-Turgen rivers, trout farms, and relict mossy spruce forests of Chin-Turgen—a rare, fairy-tale woodland.

  • 💦 Bear Waterfall (≈30 m): the day’s “aperitif”—a short approach (~15–25 min from the road) to a powerful струя bursting from a narrow throat. The spray refreshes, the rock gleams, and the framing spruce boughs make postcard shots.

  • 🥾 Next—the main trek to Kairak Waterfall (the tallest in the gorge, cascades totaling up to ~55–74 m). Start near the village of Batan, along the Kairakty River: suspension bridges, shady stretches under Schrenk’s spruce, meadows with первоцветы. Hiking pace: ~3 hours up and ~3 hours down; plan 8 hours “with stops” for photos and snacks.

  • 🍲 Packed lunch on the trail (energy bars, nuts, a thermos) or a late meal on the way back at a roadside café/trout farm. In the evening—return to Almaty (arrival ~19:30–20:30), a hot shower, and well-earned rest.

  • ⚠️ Safety: on the trails—trekking shoes with tread, poles, запас water 1.5–2 L/person, a rain poncho, sun protection. In the national park an eco-fee is paid; take all trash back down with you.
